Alan Arkin: Little Miss Sunshine actor dies aged 89 - BBC

US actor Alan Arkin, who won an Oscar and a Bafta for his role as the outrageous grandad in the film Little Miss Sunshine, has died aged 89.

During a screen and stage career that spanned seven decades, Arkin appeared in Ben Affleck's Oscar-winning Argo.

His death was confirmed by his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony in a family statement on Friday.

"Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man," they said.

"A loving husband, father, grand and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed."

Arkin also voiced JD Salinger in the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman from 2015 to 2016. His co-star in another recent Netflix series The Kominsky Method, Paul Reiser, reacted to the news of his death by tweeting that "a world without Alan Arkin is… not so great."

"I've loved this man from the moment he came on screen in The Russians Are Coming (Whitaker Walt!)," he wrote. "I was 8.

"Getting to know him - and getting a laugh out of him - is a highlight of my life. RIP dear friend."

Spinal Tap star Michael McKean also paid tribute to one of his heroes and friend online, saying: "When I was a young actor people wanted to know if I wanted to be a serious actor or a funny one.

"I'd answer, 'Which kind is Alan Arkin?' and that shut them up."

He described Arkin as "charming, hilarious, and armed with a flawless [nonsense] detector, he was pure pleasure to be with."

The New York-born and Los Angeles-raised actor, director and screenwriter, known for his deadpan comic timing, had acting lessons from childhood; but actually started out in music, singing and playing guitar in a folk band called The Tarriers.

They scored a top five hit in 1956 with The Banana Boat Song, later made famous by Harry Belafonte.

A college dropout, he moved to Chicago in 1960 and became an early member of the Second City improvisational comedy troupe, which he once noted had "literally saved my life".

His acting career began auspiciously on Broadway, appearing in the play Enter Laughing in 1963, which won him a Tony Award for best actor.

He became famous by appearing in films like 1966's The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming and then The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, both of which saw him nominated for the best actor Oscar. He won a Golden Globe award for the former, a Cold War comedy.

Moving into directing early on, he was nominated for another Tony in 1973 for his off stage work on the play The Sunshine Boys.

'He's a maniac'

Back on screen, after appearing in Tim Burton's 1990 fantasy romance Edward Scissorhands, opposite Johnny Depp, his performance in 2006's Little Miss Sunshine saw him win both an Oscar and Bafta for best supporting actor.

The tragicomedy centred around members of a dysfunctional family taking their youngest to compete in a child beauty pageant.

In it, Arkin played the foul-mouthed grandfather Edwin Hoover, who goes to live with his family after being evicted from a retirement home for snorting heroin.

He goes on to coach his granddaughter Olive, an aspiring beauty queen, in preparation for the pageant, teaching her how to striptease.

"He's a maniac, but to me he was absolutely believable," Arkin once said of the character.

While the critics loved his work, the actor was never interested in the talk that surrounded him and his films.

"I've never met Oscar Buzz," he joked. "I've heard a lot about him, but I've never met the man."

Jeff Kravitz

In his 2018 memoir Out of My Mind, he revealed that despite his success as a younger man, he had been utterly miserable most of the time.

He explained how he managed to turn his personal life around through meditation.

In an interview with the Guardian around the book's release he said he'd been an anxious child and that acting, which at times he found to be "torture", had given him strength.

"I had this sense that I didn't exist," he said. "My parents were wonderful people in many ways, but they weren't affectionate. I don't remember ever being touched by either one.

"I felt ignored to the point where I didn't even exist - so acting was my lifeline to not feeling like I was being obliterated. For many years, the only place I felt alive was on stage."

Icon and Image

In Affleck's 2012 historical drama, Argo - a surprise winner of the best picture Oscar - he portrayed Lester Siegel, a pretend Hollywood producer.

The film is set during the Iran hostage crisis where employees of the US embassy are held captive and a plan is launched to rescue them involving a fake film being made there.

An enthusiastic reader, Arkin also played Captain John Yossarian (Bombardier) in Mike Nichols' film adaptation of Joseph Heller's satirical black comedy novel Catch-22.

For his TV work, Arkin won Emmy Award acting nominations for shows like Escape from Sobibor, The Pentagon Papers and The Kominsky Method, as the agent of a once successful actor played by Michael Douglas.

The veteran was honoured with own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.

Jennifer Lawrence's LBD Is a Little Blair Waldorf and a Lot Wednesday Addams - InStyle

little.indah.link

Fresh off her press tour for her very first raunchy R-rated comedy, No Hard FeelingsJennifer Lawrence's schedule isn't letting up. While she's not stepping out onto red carpets and making appearances at talk shows, she's out and about in New York shooting a campaign up on the Upper West Side — no word on what brand it's for, but it's probably safe to assume that it's for Dior, where she's served as an ambassador for years.

In the latest shots (she was wrangling an armful of dogs yesterday for a different shoot), she paired a Blair Waldorf-approved thick headband with a statement-making LBD that featured oversized shoulders and a nipped waist, a signature Dior swerve since the brand debuted its Bar Jacket back in the 1940s. She added a pair of Ray-Ban wayfarers to complete the look, which was all black (she's in New York, after all) and tiptoed into goth territory, though it was more sleek and stealthy than Victorian mourning attire. The look also featured tiny earrings and little kitten-heeled mules.

James Devaney/GC Images

Speaking about her new movie, Lawrence continued to be a relatable queen by saying that between takes, she was simply hanging out and eating grilled cheese sandwiches.

"She’s hilarious and she’s a Dior model who is like a full dummy in the best possible way. During a break, she’d be like, ‘I’m going to get grilled cheese. You want one?’" co-star, Laura Benanti, told Variety. "I was like, ‘If that’s how you look by eating grilled cheese, yes, I’ll [have] some, please."’

Demanding Accountability in Montana's Little Rocky Mountains - Earthjustice

little.indah.link

The law is clear that would-be miners must have permits to mine. Yet, some miners flout the law, creating chaos and destruction in their wake. And some miners go so far as to illegally mine in an area that bears the lasting scars of one of the worst environmental justice disasters in Montana’s history. That is exactly the unprecedented situation faced by the Fort Belknap Indian Community — comprised of the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine Tribes—in Montana’s Little Rocky Mountains. Earthjustice and our partners, including the Tribes, are joining the state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in demanding accountability.

The Zortman mine, part of the broader Zortman-Landusky Reclamation Area, has left a legacy of persistent toxic pollution in the Little Rocky Mountains, disproportionately impacting the Fort Belknap Indian Community’s lands and waters. Operated for nearly three decades as open-pit, cyanide heap-leach mines, the Zortman-Landusky mines plagued the surrounding area with cyanide and acid mine drainage, contaminating surface and ground waters hydrologically connected to the mines. Adding insult to injury, in 1998, the mine operators declared bankruptcy and left behind a drastically underfunded clean-up effort, which has largely been shouldered by taxpayers.

Despite the shuttering of the mines, acid mine drainage and other contaminants such as cyanide, selenium, and nitrates continue to contaminate water in the area, including water flowing onto the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. This acid mine drainage will perpetually pollute the area and the water must be continually treated. Even with ongoing treatment, a plume of contaminants continues to creep onto Reservation lands, threatening key cultural sites and the Fort Belknap Tribes’ ceremonial and powwow grounds.

The Tribes have a long history of opposing mining in the region. The Little Rocky Mountains were once entirely within the boundaries of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, but when gold was discovered in the 1880’s, the federal government pressured the Tribes to cede the gold-bearing areas to the United States. The Zortman and Landusky mine sites are surrounded on three sides by the Reservation. The land desecrated by the mines in the Little Rocky Mountains holds profound cultural significance to the Tribes. Yet the Tribes not only face continued pollution of these sacred grounds, but now must also contend with new miners whose disregard for the Tribes’ strongly held ties to the land only piles on to their environmental justice burden.

These miners, Luke Ployhar and Owen Voigt, have unrelentingly attempted to renew mining at the former Zortman site for the past four years. The Tribes, and allied conservation organizations, have pushed back at every turn, including by filing litigation challenging the environmental analysis for new mining and submitting comments on new mining proposals. Because of this advocacy, Montana’s DEQ, charged with permitting mining in the state, began consulting with the Tribes on mining proposals and ultimately required Ployhar to complete an environmental impact statement (EIS) in 2022, specifically citing the need to further examine impacts to tribal cultural resources. But the agency later discovered that Ployhar and Voigt had already charged forward with mining without authorization, threatening nearby waters with additional acid mine drainage and compromising the reclamation efforts already undertaken at the site.

In April 2023, after months of failed negotiations with the miners, DEQ brought an enforcement action against Ployhar, Voigt, and their respective companies, for circumventing the Montana permitting process and illegally mining at the Zortman site. DEQ has requested over half a million dollars in fines and permanent injunctive relief to prohibit Ployhar, Voigt, and their companies from future mining until the disturbances are reclaimed and the penalties are paid. Earthjustice, representing the Fort Belknap Indian Community, Montana Environmental Information Center, Earthworks, and Montana Trout Unlimited, are intervening in the case to support DEQ in its enforcement action.

DEQ is right to take action against illegal mining, especially in an area plagued with such a catastrophic mining history. Our intervention in this suit is to ensure that Fort Belknap Indian Community voices are centered in this issue of profound importance to the Tribes, and that Ployhar and Voigt are held responsible for their dirty deeds.

Fort Belknap Indian Community President Jeffrey Stiffarm said it best: “[Ployhar’s and Voigt’s] intentional and deliberate disregard of the state’s mining permitting process further shows their bad faith efforts and determination to push their profit driven agenda. There is no regard for the letter of the law, the environment, or spiritual beliefs. Our Gros Ventre and Assiniboine beliefs and responsibilities are to protect our traditional and spiritual lands and react as good stewards of the land. Even though the current boundaries are drawn by non-Indian laws, our ancestral lands include the mined area, and the pollution created by mining will flow onto Fort Belknap Indian Reservation lands. We, as a Council, are entrusted and charged with the responsibility to protect the land.”

DEQ is entrusted and charged with holding bad actors accountable when they destroy Montana’s lands. We look forward to supporting the agency’s effort to demand accountability for the sake of the Fort Belknap Indian Community and all of Montana’s downstream communities.

Warriors' Klay Thompson admits being teammates with Chris Paul is 'a little weird' - Fox News

little.indah.link

After many playoff battles, Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson knows that lacing up his sneakers alongside Chris Paul is going to be an odd feeling at first.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Thompson discussed his new teammate, admitting it is a little strange after so many years playing against Paul.

Chris Paul, #3 of the Houston Rockets, handles the ball against Klay Thompson, #11 of the Golden State Warriors, during Game Two of the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2019 NBA Playoffs on April 30, 2019 at ORACLE Arena in Oakland, California. (Noah Graham/NBAE via Getty Images)

"Any time you get to play with a player who is one of the best of your generation it’s an honor," Thompson told The Athletic. "It’s a little weird because we’ve had so many battles in the past with Chris, and he’s led so many teams that nearly knocked us off or did knock us off all the way back in 2014.

"I think he’s just going to add such a calming presence and leadership component that we need. I know Steph and him have a long history together being both from North Carolina. For me, it’s going to be a smooth transition playing with such a passer and playmaker, I’m just excited."

WARRIORS' STEPH CURRY REFLECTS ON JORDAN POOLE'S DEPARTURE: 'YOU HATE LOSING JP'

Golden State made the move for CP3 after a season in which the chemistry of the team was off before the Warriors even began the defense of their title.

Draymond Green punched Jordan Poole at practice during training camp, starting the season off on a sour note.

Green was fined by the organization but not suspended, and the four-time NBA champion was in the starting lineup for the opening of the 2022-23 season.

During his end-of-season exit interview, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr discussed how the punch from Green impacted the team during the season.

"There was some of that that was lost this year, for sure," Kerr said when asked about the chemistry on the team during the season. "There's no hiding from it – the incident with Draymond and Jordan at the beginning of the year played a role in that. It's hard for that not to impact a team.

"Anytime some trust is lost, then it makes the process much more difficult, and there was some trust lost. That's as blunt as I can be. The only way to try to correct course is to continue to communicate with players and coaches, and those relationships have to be built. The bonds have to be built. I think that’s a major focus for us this offseason. We have to get back to what has made us really successful, which is a really trusting environment and a group that relies on one another and makes each other better."

Poole struggled during Golden State’s postseason and will now be playing in a Washington Wizards uniform after being moved as part of the trade for Paul.

"You hate losing JP," Steph Curry said. "I know it’s not all the way official yet. So I don’t want to talk too much before it is. But that’s the tough part of the business, seeing a young guy come into his own [and then get traded]. It’s a great opportunity for him. It’s just you get to know someone like that, build a friendship, build a bond."

Paul will be entering his 19th NBA season at the age of 38 with an elusive championship on his mind.

"We’ve known each other for a very, very long time, man," Paul told ESPN's Malika Andrews about Curry.

"So I’m excited to get a chance to play alongside him, Klay [Thompson], [Andrew Wiggins], Draymond [Green], all of them. They’ve got an unbelievable organization. That team is just -- they’ve been playing together for a while, and they know what they’re doing."

Warriors' Klay Thompson: Chris Paul Trade 'a Little Weird' After Past 'Battles' - Bleacher Report

little.indah.link
OAKLAND, CA - MAY 8: Chris Paul #3 of the Houston Rockets defends Klay Thompson #11 of the Golden State Warriors during Game Five of the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2019 NBA Playoffs on May 8, 2019 at ORACLE Arena in Oakland, California. Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson acknowledged there might be an adjustment as the team welcomes in a player who used to be a notable rival.

Thompson told The Athletic's Anthony Slater he's excited about what Chris Paul will provide on the court but that the situation is "a little weird" given the Warriors' history with Paul:

"Any time you get to play with a player who is one of the best of your generation it's an honor. It's a little weird because we've had so many battles in the past with Chris and he's led so many teams that nearly knocked us off or did knock us off all the way back in 2014. I think he's just going to add such a calming presence and leadership component that we need. I know Steph and him have a long history together being both from North Carolina. For me, it's going to be a smooth transition playing with such a passer and playmaker, I'm just excited."

Because they play the same position, Paul and Stephen Curry have maintained a competitive rivalry on the court over the years. Draymond Green said in 2015 that Curry had a "personal vendetta" to be better than Paul.

Things really came to a head during CP3's two-year run with the Houston Rockets. Golden State sent Houston packing in the 2018 Western Conference finals, claiming the final two games in the series to stave off elimination. The the Warriors prevailed one year later in the conference semifinals.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst recalled at the 3:30 mark of his Hoop Collective podcast on June 23 that Golden State's players exuberantly celebrated their 2019 victory over the Rockets and were yelling "F--k Chris Paul" as they made their way to the locker room.

That's all in the past, though. The quest for an NBA championship can be a great unifier. Especially in Paul's case, putting aside any bad blood might not be that difficult in pursuit of his first ever title.

Curry was highly complimentary of the 12-time All-Star as well.

"Every team that CP has been on gets better," he said to Slater. "That's the most consistent thing about him, and who he is and what he brings to the team."

Still, those first few games when Paul and Curry are on the same team might be a bit jarring for many fans.

44% of Disney Adults Hate This Sneaky Little Mermaid Change - allears.net

little.indah.link

The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid hit theaters in May and it’s got a lot of people talking.

AMC in Disney Springs promoting the live-action “Little Mermaid”

We’ve seen new treats hit the Disney parks and we saw an attraction change in honor of the film. These 2 celebrities are already talking about a spin-off that many fans are hoping will come true.

YouGov released the results of a recent study they conducted about Disney Princesses. They surveyed 1000 adults in the U.S. asking various questions including a few related to The Little Mermaid. Let’s take a look at the findings.

The Little Mermaid poster at Hollywood Studios

Question 17 on the survey reads:

“The original song“Kiss the Girl” from “The Little Mermaid” was released in 1989 and includes the main character’s sidekick singing, “Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do. Possible she wants you, too. There is one way to ask her. It don’t take a word. Not a single word. Go on and kiss the girl.” Do you approve or disapprove of the original lyrics?”

©YouGov

You can see that 25% strongly approve while 29% somewhat approve. You can also see there is not a lot of difference in gender but there was quite a bit of difference in age range. For example, of ages 18-29, 32% strongly approved while only 25% of ages 45-64 and only 16% of ages 65+ strongly approved.

Question 18 read:

The songwriter for the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” has said the lyrics for the song “Kiss the Girl” will be modified to reflect changing social attitudes toward consent. Do you think the song’s lyrics should be changed in the live-action remake?

©YouGov

As you can see 44% of Disney adults responded that “no”, the lyrics should not be changed. It should be noted that 28% said they were not sure, this could be due to them not having the new lyrics available at the time of the survey.

Question 19 asked:

“The original song “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from “The Little Mermaid” was released in 1989 and includes the movie’s villain singing, “On land it’s much preferred for ladies not to say a word, and after all dear, what is idle prattle for? Come on, they’re not all that impressed with conversation…It’s she who holds her tongue who gets a man.” Do you approve or disapprove of the original lyrics?”

©YouGov

There was only 19% of people strongly approved, 27% somewhat approved and 16% somewhat disapproved. This time, there is a large difference between age gap here with 27% of ages 18-29 strongly approving while only 20% of ages 30-44 and 45-64 strongly approving and just 10% of 65+ strongly approving.

Question 20 read:

“The songwriter for the live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” has said the lyrics for the song “Poor Unfortunate Souls” will be modified to reflect changing social attitudes toward gender roles. Do you think the song’s lyrics should be changed in the live-action remake?”

©YouGov

30% overall said that the lyrics should be changed but 45% said they shouldn’t. Ages 18-29 were closely split between yes at 41% and no at 42%. However, ages 45-64 had a large difference with 19% saying yes and 51% saying no.

High school graduate wins religious freedom essay contest telling story of Little Li - Catholic News Agency

little.indah.link

As part of Religious Freedom Week, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) announced the “Witness to Freedom” essay contest winner. The winning essay was from Sofia Cornicelli, a recent high school graduate from St. Thomas More Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Her article told the story of Little Li, an 11-year-old girl in 1950s Communist China and her devotion to the Eucharist.

“The thing that struck me the most about Little Li’s story is that throughout her story her priority wasn’t actually religious freedom,” Cornicelli told EWTN News Nightly on June 23. “Her priority was making sure that the body of her Lord, which was scattered all over the floor by the communist soldiers, was taken care of with as much reverence as possible.”

“So, through her simple actions of reverencing the desecrated body of her Lord, her Lord made her a witness to religious freedom,” she added.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock Is Excited to 'Unlock' Her 'Potential' with Solo Music Outside of Little Mix (Exclusive) - PEOPLE

little.indah.link

Over a year since Little Mix announced its hiatus, Leigh-Anne Pinnock is exploring solo stardom with her debut single, "Don't Say Love."

The British singer-songwriter spoke to PEOPLE about the new song and her upcoming album on the 2023 BET Awards red carpet on Sunday, noting that she's excited to "show everybody what I'm made of."

"I feel good. The reception to the single's been incredible. I'm excited to be in the States promoting it, and just seeing everyone's reaction has just been amazing," Pinnock, 31, tells PEOPLE. "It's been fun."

Released earlier this month, "Don't Say Love" was co-written by the recently-married musician alongside Gregory Aldae Hein, Jon Bellion, Jimmie Gutch and Pete Nappi. It's a dance-pop song with elements of U.K. garage sounds, marking a slight departure from Little Mix's signature style while remaining familiar to longtime listeners.

But Pinnock says the song is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the sound of her upcoming debut solo album. "For me, it was important to incorporate the genres that I've loved listening to growing up and even now," she says of her new music's inspiration. "So, reggae, R&B, Afrobeats, a little bit of garage."

"I wanted to fuse these genres and put my stamp on it. I’m really excited for the album," she teases. "It’s coming together really nicely."

With the upcoming project, Pinnock says fans will get to see a side of her that she wasn't able to fully express in Little Mix. "I definitely think there's a lot more to Leigh-Anne than you even know," she notes.

YouTube

"When you’re in a group, there’s only so much you can show of yourself, so I think that’s the exciting part," she says of the "Confetti" trio, which also includes Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall. (Original fourth member Jesy Nelson left the group in November 2020.)

Pinnock adds, "I get to unlock all this potential now and show everybody what I’m made of and what I can do."

In December 2021, Little Mix announced that the band would be taking a break following their 2022 tour as they assured fans that they were "not splitting up."

Little Mix. Jeff Spicer/Getty

"We wanted to let you all know that after the Confetti tour in April/May next year we are going to be taking a break from Little Mix," the group wrote at the time. "It's been 10 amazing years, a wonderful non-stop adventure, and we feel the time is right to take a break so we can recharge and work on some other projects."

The "Shout Out to My Ex" performers thanked their fans for the love and "never-ending support" since their start on The X Factor in 2011.

"We are not splitting up - Little Mix are here to stay," the group clarified. "We have plans for more music, tours and performances in the future. We've made so many incredible memories with you all, and we can't wait to make so many more."

Magic is over at Disney with $900 Million lost on recent releases including The Little Mermaid - Marca English

little.indah.link

According to box office analyst Valliant Renegade, The Walt Disney Co. has faced significant losses, nearing $900 million, on its last eight studio releases. Titles like "The Little Mermaid" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" haven't been able to deliver the expected results, adding to Disney's economic woes. In fact, two of their recent films, "Strange World" and "Lightyear," were outright flops.

Valliant Renegade highlighted an important aspect in a YouTube video, saying: "One of the things that we always talk about here, that is the perfect time to remind everybody, is that Disney consumes all of its own content post-theatrical." This means that Disney no longer licenses their content, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to third-party platforms such as Netflix. As a result, they have lost out on billions of dollars' worth of potential revenue from these contracts.

So, it's not just the box office losses that need to be considered; there are also economic opportunity costs to take into account. If Disney had pursued licensing deals with major streamers like Netflix or Amazon Prime, or adopted a model similar to Universal's split Pay 1 window, they could have generated much more revenue. However, Disney has chosen to keep their content exclusively on Disney+ to support their own streaming platform.

The company has cut 7,000 jobs

Disney has been undergoing a strategic reorganization and is aiming to cut about 7,000 jobs as part of a targeted $5.5 billion cost savings plan across the company. Bob Iger, who returned as CEO in November, has been working to revive Disney's streaming business while ensuring the stability of their theme parks.

Additionally, he has been grappling with protecting Disney World's theme park district from potential takeover attempts by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Disney sued DeSantis in April, accusing him of government retaliation after the company opposed a controversial law. The legal battle is the latest development in an ongoing feud between Disney and the governor.

Despite these challenges, Disney is striving to find its footing and adapt to the changing landscape of the entertainment industry while leveraging its strengths in various sectors.

Book Review: Little Monsters by Adrienne Brodeur - The New York Times

little.indah.link

In her new novel, “Little Monsters,” Adrienne Brodeur takes readers on a stressful march toward a patriarch’s 70th birthday party.

LITTLE MONSTERS, by Adrienne Brodeur

Adrienne Brodeur’s “Little Monsters” is cleverly calculated to push all the buttons for a wide swath of women. Like her 2019 memoir “Wild Game,” which examined the role Brodeur played in her mother’s long affair with a family friend, “Little Monsters” is a tale of dysfunction and buried secrets, set in and around moneyed Cape Cod.

But the time frame of this engaging, neatly plotted novel distinguishes it, serving as the emotional underpinning of the action. “Little Monsters” is set during the precise cultural moment when it seemed that a woman would soon be ensconced in the White House. The action opens in April 2016, when feminists like Abby Gardner, a quietly ambitious artist, had no idea that, by January, there would be a sudden imperative to knit pink hats and march in the streets.

In April, Abby is focused on other important dates coming up in the fall of 2016. In October, the very personal paintings she’s been working on will be in a group exhibit. She’s nervously anticipating an associated interview with an art magazine. And, if all goes well, she’ll be a mother by November.

Abby plans to keep her surprise pregnancy a secret until her father’s 70th birthday party in August; that’s when she’ll give him a painting revealing the news. Adam, a marine biologist, still lives in the funky home where he raised Abby and her older brother Ken after their mother died suddenly. His parenting style combined benign neglect with instruction in the flora and fauna of the Cape, punctuated by disappearances when he went off his bipolar meds and/or fell in love again. He’s not the sort to beat himself up about this — or anything.

Turning 70 doesn’t stop Adam from thinking of himself as dashing, but it does annoy him that he’s being forced to retire. He has a big reveal planned for the party as well: an incredible breakthrough about humpback whales. Adam hasn’t made this discovery yet, but going off his medication has him convinced that it’s within his grasp. As for the election, he’s still pulling for Bernie Sanders.

Over in a waterfront mansion in Chatham, Ken has a secret too. His wife, Jenny, has required him to get therapy, for reasons the reader immediately knows are creepy. He resists the efforts of the shrink to get him to open up, but attends the sessions because he needs Jenny, particularly for his next move: running as a Republican in the “palest blue congressional district” in Massachusetts.

Ken has had money ever since he married Jenny, who was Abby’s best friend at the Rhode Island School of Design, but as the novel begins he’s just closed on a real estate deal that will make him filthy rich in his own right. A moderate Republican who believes in climate change, particularly as it pertains to the erosion of his own waterfront, Ken has not yet donned a MAGA hat. (But he isn’t ruling it out.)

Jenny, a former free spirit who now views hostessing as her “superpower” and wonders how one glass of wine so often turns into a whole bottle, is planning Adam’s birthday party. Brodeur builds the tension toward that evening in August, setting up the drama just as efficiently as Jenny sets a dinner table for however many people Ken wants to impress.

One of Brodeur’s best dramatic devices is a Boston cop named Steph who spends the summer on the Cape poking into the lives of Adam, Ken and Abby. Through her eyes, we see the Gardners — each exceptional by societal standards, but damaged. Steph’s wife, Toni, a tarot card reading astrologer, warns her to proceed with caution: “Wounded people wound.” She isn’t wrong, although as a supporting character, Toni is a little too on-the-nose.

As I raced happily through the pages, I wondered how the book would work without Brodeur’s highly specific framing. The election backdrop comes to seem like another character and is the reason “Little Monsters” is so alluring, with its sense of looming familial implosion within a cultural implosion. Brodeur infuses the book with the simmering anger that would grow into great rage after the election. Surely the women in this novel will look back on its events through a sharper lens in 2017. Adam’s flirtations with baristas definitely won’t play well in the #MeToo era.

Did I feel catered to by “Little Monsters?” Somewhat. Its very title it reminded me how minor monstrous acts — particularly abuses of power — enable what we refer to in movies and television as the Big Bad. Brodeur is very deliberately examining a small family horror story within a larger political context. Maybe in taking us back to an age of relative innocence, optimism and complacency, she’s taunting her readers a little. Or maybe she’s giving us a pep talk.

Mary Pols is a Maine-based writer and editor. She is the author of a memoir, “Accidentally on Purpose.”

Kate Middleton dons a large hat after being mocked over Dumb Little Hat - The News International

Kate Middleton dons a large hat after being mocked over Dumb Little Hat

Kate Middleton's red hat that she donned at the Royal Ascot  evoked memory of an article published in 2020 where she was criticized for snubbing Meghan Markle during the last royal engagement of the Duchess of Sussex as senior member of the royal family.

"Imagine Being Rude in This Dumb Little Hat," read the headline of the piece which drew criticism from hundreds of royal supporters.

Meghan Markle has been accused of drafting the article criticizing Kate Middleton.

A royal expert went on to claim that Meghan provided bullet points for the report as the author of the report embellished the piece against Kate.

The journalist, who wrote the piece mocking Kate's "little hat", was also been accused of harboring a strong dislike for Princess of Wales.

The wife of Prince Harry, the expert, claimed regularly shared grievances about her sister-in-law with the editors of the website which published the article critical of the future Queen consort.

The claims made by Emily HRH could not be independently confirmed but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex suggested in their Netflix documentary that Kate and her husband Prince William had a major role behind their decision to step down from their royal duties.

Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, however, have not directly targeted the Princess of Wales in their media appearances despite the fact that the Duke of Sussex has come down hard on his own brother William in his book Spare which came out earlier this year.

'The Bear' Season 2 Puts a Little Optimism on the Menu - The New York Times

little.indah.link

With a gentler tone and reverence for hospitality, the Hulu show reaches beyond the chef to give other workers the spotlight.

This article contains spoilers for the Hulu series “The Bear.”

Even before the bump in Italian beef sandwich sales last year, you could sense an immediate, almost feverish enthusiasm for “The Bear.” You could measure it, not in actual views (Hulu doesn’t release streaming data), but in thirsty memes of Carmen (Carmy) Berzatto, the broken chef with a wavy jumble of unwashed hair and a startled, pink face that always seemed recently slapped.

Carmy, played by Jeremy Allen White, is the tortured chef at the center of “The Bear,” determined to, though not always capable of, doing things differently.Chuck Hodes/FX

Carmy, played by Jeremy Allen White, became the patron saint of obsessive chefs, their personal lives obliterated by a dedication to restaurant work. After his brother’s death, Carmy was determined to get his family’s ancient, grimy, lawless sandwich shop into shape while also, somehow, being a good guy — a dilemma he tackled between exploding toilets, fights, Al-Anon meetings and panic attacks.

“I’m fine, really,” Carmy told his sister over the phone, “I just have trouble breathing sometimes and wake up screaming.”

The breakout show’s portrayal of the anxiety and tension that rule restaurant kitchens was darkly realistic. And while the second season, which premiered Thursday on Hulu, doesn’t completely leave those pressures behind, it conveys an unexpected optimism about the restaurant industry and the people who make it run.

The new season of “The Bear” follows its workers on their various adventures as the restaurant closes for renovations.Chuck Hodes/FX

Season 2 of “The Bear” swivels attention away from the chef and his trauma to spend time with other characters and, in the process, does something that TV and movies about restaurants hardly ever do: It subverts the power structure of the brigade system and invites more workers into the center of the story, where they belong.

Though it never feels instructive or moralizing, there’s a sense of hopefulness as “The Bear” wrestles with larger themes of hospitality. Each member of the kitchen crew finds moments of joy and deep meaning in their work, whether they’re drawn to it by devotion or dysfunction (or a broken emulsion of both).

In its second season, “The Bear” sends two of its characters on transformational internships, or stages, at other restaurants. Lionel Boyce, left, is Marcus, a pastry chef who finds inspiration on a gentle internship in Copenhagen.Chuck Hodes/FX

One episode focuses on Marcus, the young pastry cook who’s a sponge for new techniques and ingredients, played by Lionel Boyce. In Copenhagen, he interns with a brilliant pastry chef played by Will Poulter.

It doesn’t matter that recent reporting on the stage economy of Copenhagen, one of the world’s fine-dining capitals, has revealed a pattern of abuse and dangerous working conditions for unpaid interns. In “The Bear,” the stage is a dream: Marcus’s tasks are simply to learn from a skilled but kind and patient mentor, to get out and about and feel inspired, and to come up with some new dishes of his own.

A stage at a fine-dining restaurant transforms Richie, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach.Chuck Hodes/FX

No one was more suspicious of the fussy quirks of fine-dining kitchens than Richie, the fragile chaos machine played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. But after a stage of his own in a Chicago fine-dining restaurant, Richie is completely transformed. He cares about organizing pens and polishing silverware. He wears suits now.

In an arc that made me weep, Richie learns that he has the aptitude and composure for expediting, for being in the eye of the storm, for channeling all of his pettiness and intensity into fixing problems and making diners happy.

There were flashbacks, in the first season of “The Bear,” of a toxic chef who trashed cooks on the line, telling them they’d be better off dead. But here the show seems keen to remind us that fine dining can work differently, and that wonderful people are still scattered throughout it.

“The Bear” always blurred the lines between family and workplace in ways that felt both tender and menacing, and the most nightmarish kitchen scene takes place not in a professional kitchen, but at a Berzatto family Christmas at home a few years back, when Carmy’s brother Michael was still alive.

Jamie Lee Curtis is devastating as their alcoholic mother who can’t get through cooking and serving a beautiful holiday dinner — an elaborate Feast of the Seven Fishes — without wringing guilt and shame from her children. Her inability to host offers a glimpse at what shaped the siblings and warped their relationships to cooking, but it’s also a razor-edged contrast to the cooks’ growing sense of hospitality as instinctual and deeply fulfilling.

Sydney, played by Ayo Edebiri, is the enterprising stagiaire who quickly turned her internship into a serious job.Chuck Hodes/FX

Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is crushed by her anxiety about the restaurant opening and herself as a leader. She worries about failure, but also about not having a financial stake in the business.

Despite all of that, she’s delighted and re-energized after making a simple omelet for Carmy’s woozy, hungry sister, Natalie (Abby Elliott). She tops it with chives and crushed potato chips, plating it beautifully on a tray, as if she were carrying it to her own mother on a holiday morning. As she stands behind Natalie, watching her eat, Sydney looks happier than she’s been in ages.

It’s a beautiful and agonizing scene that compounds the hospitality industry’s complications, and the ways a calling to it can both hurt and heal. Sure, Sydney deserves more than the pleasure of watching someone fill with happiness when they eat her food. But also, that pleasure is real and, sometimes, there isn’t anything else.

Kelly Clarkson Reveals She Had a Little Text Exchange With Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock About Her New Album: I Didnt Just Diminish Us - Yahoo Entertainment

Kelly Clarkson Reveals She Had a 'Little Text Exchange' With Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock About Her New Album

Despite their divorce drama, Kelly Clarkson briefly spoke to ex-husband Brandon Blackstock about her new album, Chemistry.

“We did have a little text exchange about it,” the inaugural American Idol champion, 41, said on Thursday, June 22, while appearing on the Today show. “I don’t even remember why or how it happened, but I was like, ‘Hey, I didn’t just diminish us down to one (thing).’ You know what I’m saying? It’s all in there, the ride. The beauty is in there, as well. Now, there’s a lot of pain, but that’s what happens, for all of us.”

Clarkson and Blackstock, 46, were married for nearly seven years before the “Stronger” singer filed for divorce from the music manager in June 2020. The pair got into a heated legal battle over dividing their assets and who would get custody of their two minor children: River Rose, 9, and Remington, 7. After two years of a constant back and forth, their split was finalized in March 2022.

The Kelly Clarkson Show host was awarded primary custody of their kids, while Blackstock — who also has two older children from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth — received monthly visitations. She also agreed to pay her former spouse a one-time sum of $1.3 million and $115,00 per month in spousal support until January 2024.

In addition to Clarkson's legal woes with her ex, she has also been involved in a three-year legal battle with her former father-in-law, Narvel Blackstock. Brandon’s father and his talent agency, Starstruck Management Group, sued Clarkson for breach of contract and unpaid commissions. The “Miss Independent” songstress was represented by the group from 2007 to 2020.

Her former father-in-law claimed Clarkson owed them $1.4 million in unpaid commission for her work on The Voice and her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show. Clarkson countersued him for the allegations, and their legal battle is set to conclude later this month.

While Clarkson appeared to remain strong in the public eye during her messy breakup, she confessed that wasn’t the case behind closed doors.

“Just to be brutally honest, I did not handle it well. I had many sessions with just my friends [where] I couldn’t even speak,” she admitted to Zane Lowe during a Wednesday, June 21, interview on Apple Music 1. “I was crying so hard, even before separating. There were just a lot of now unhealthy habits you recognize or habits that you recognize that you didn’t see before. Hindsight is a lot easier.”

As she worked through her heartbreak, Clarkson channeled her emotions — and reflected on the good times — on her 10th studio album, which dropped on Friday, June 23.

“I didn’t want everybody to think I was just coming out with some ‘I’m angry,’ ‘I’m sad’ [record] — just one or two emotions. This album is definitely the arc of an entire relationship. That whole relationship shouldn’t be brought down to one thing,” she wrote via Instagram in March 2023 while announcing the name of the album. “There’s the good, the bad and the ugly kind of thing going on. Chemistry can be a really amazing, sexy, cool, fun thing, but it can also be very bad for you. So that’s why I named it Chemistry, I thought it was the perfect title to describe the entire album.”
