Grandma Joanne Segovia accused of running fentanyl ring is all smiles at Little League game despite potential 20-year sentence - New York Post

The “Breaking Bad” grandma accused of running an international drug ring out of her California home is living life “as if nothing has happened,” and doesn’t even have an ankle monitor, pictures taken by The Post show.

Joanne Segovia, 64, has been out on bail since charged with allegedly leading a double life dealing drugs, including deadly fentanyl, while working as the executive director for the San Jose Police Officers’ Association in March.

Despite facing up to 20 years in prison, Segovia can be seen smiling and cheering at a park where she watched her grandson’s Little League game over the weekend.

Segovia and her husband, Dom, still live in the same quiet gated community in San Jose which federal prosecutors claim was the base of her drug shipping operation, while she awaits the case going to trial.

According to federal investigators, Segovia — who was often referred to as the “grandma of the Police Officers Association”— used her home computer and her computer at the police union office to pay for shipments of controlled substances, including the sedative Zolpidem, painkillers Tapentadol and Tramadol and heavier substances.

According to the 13-page complaint, the 64-year-old allegedly received at least 61 packages at her San Jose home from various countries — including China, Canada and India — between October 2015 and January 2023.

The packages delivered at her San Jose home were marked as food supplements, wedding party favors, chocolates and other items to hide the drugs, investigators said.

Under her release agreement, she is not required to wear a GPS ankle monitor, federal authorities told The Post. However, since Segovia’s March 13 arrest she was released on bond under certain conditions, which include attending a substance abuse treatment program, agreeing not to use drugs and submitting to drug testing.

She also cannot drink heavily, must not communicate with witnesses related to the case and had to surrender all of her travel documents.

The judge, however, did approve a request and allowed Segovia to travel to Reno, Nevada for two days for a family reunion and a baby shower, according to court documents obtained by The Post.

“She’s out here living her life as if nothing has happened,” a source told The Post. “It’s just incredible because nothing is being said about what she did. She comes and goes whenever, and I tell you, it does seem very strange.”

In the complaint, investigators also said Segovia in 2021 “was told by a supplier to send a package to a woman in North Carolina. Segovia then sent this supplier a photograph of a shipment made using the UPS account of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association.”

Segovia allegedly continued to order the drugs even after she was interviewed by federal agents in February 2023.

At least one shipment made by Segovia led to an overdose, a source close to the case previously told The Post.

For eight years up until January, Joanne Marian Segovia, 64, used her home and work computers to get multiple-kilogram shipments of medications, including Zolpidem, Tapentadol, and Tramadol, sent to her home and office from China, India, and other far-flung locales, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday in federal court.

Segovia allegedly received shipments of narcotics at home from 2015 to 2023, authorities have said.

As part of her initial release agreement, Segovia was required to maintain or seek employment, but her attorneys asked the court to modify that condition because she cannot find employment given the publicity the case has garnered, according to her attorneys.

“Mrs. Segovia is 64-years old and had been working at the same employer for approximately 20 years at the time of her initial appearance,” wrote her attorney William Edelman in a court affidavit.

“Mrs. Segovia’s case has been subject to extensive press coverage, including numerous media inquiries to her employer and press releases by her employer. Shortly after she made her initial appearance, her employment ended.”

While Segovia might not be deemed a flight risk, her position within the police union could significantly affect her sentencing if she is found guilty.

According to Lou Shapiro, a federal criminal defense attorney and legal analyst, people who hold positions of power are held to a higher standard.

“Someone who is in a position of trust, when they abuse that trust, can face stricter sentencing consequences.

“It’s actually mentioned in the federal sentencing guidelines that someone in a position of trust can be given more time than someone who isn’t because of the sentencing guidelines.”

Segovia has pleaded not guilty. She claims the mastermind was actually her housekeeper — a “family friend” who allegedly suffers from a substance abuse disorder, according to a Homeland Security Investigations report.

The judge granted Segovia’s request and now the granny is using her early retirement to enjoy time with her family as she no doubt prepares for her trial.

Segovia’s preliminary hearing is scheduled to move forward on Aug. 28.

Carl Schulz, Jr., 52, is believed to have broken into his ex-wife Kimberly Hoffman's apartment on Whitemarsh Court in Little Egg Harbor, early Saturday, July 29, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

Hoffman called police around 5:10 a.m. saying someone was breaking into her home. Responding officers found her suffering a gunshot wound to her face, and a deceased dog who had also been shot, Billhimer said.

Schulz was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head, and later died. Authorities said he shot Hoffman and the dog, then turned the gun on himself.

A GoFundMe page launched for Kim's sons had raised more than $23,000 as of Monday, July 31.

"Kim was a remarkable person who touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and infectious smile," it reads. "She had a heart of gold and was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need.

FCPS welcomes new teachers, staff ‘a little differently’ this year - WKYT

little.indah.link

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - We are just weeks away from the start of a new school year in Fayette County.

Districts across the commonwealth are getting ready for the first day of school. Fayette County Public Schools welcomed teachers back Monday ahead of the new school year.

However, FCPS is doing it a little differently this year. They’re kicking off this school year with some energy with “FCPS YOUniversity.”

“We have new teacher orientation every year, but it’s been revamped to really focus on ensuring that they’re well equipped on day one to everything that they need to do to be successful,” said Dr. Demetrus Liggins, FCPS superintendent.

Hundreds of new staff members were welcomed into the school district Monday. This comes after FCPS offered what school leaders say is the highest starting teacher salary in Kentucky.

“That is still not nearly what they’re worth, but it’s certainly something, in the beginning, to show that we value them and put our mouth where our money is,” said Dr. Liggins.

They’re hoping this effort to welcome teachers in will act as a “thank you.”

“There’s so much emphasis placed on what teachers aren’t doing well and, at the end of the day, our teachers are the most critical pieces of our society,” said Dr. Liggins.

FCPS officials say a strong school is built on a strong staff, and they’re hoping this event makes Fayette County Public Schools have the best year yet.

The first day of school in Fayette County is August 16.

Utah little league team gets a second chance at World Series Championship - KSLTV

little.indah.link

LAYTON, Utah — It was almost one year ago when the Snow Canyon Little League baseball team was in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, getting ready for the biggest game of their life – The World Series Championship, when their teammate, Easton Oliverson suffered a fall that nearly ended his life.

Now, Oliverson’s former team is headed to Regionals with one goal; win it all there so they get another chance in Pennsylvania. And this year, they have a new motto in honor of Easton and the opportunity that lies ahead.

“Our motto is second chances are earned, not given,” said head coach Kyle Hafen on Sunday.

A dog tag with “2nd Chances Coop” being worn by a player. (KSL TV)

The 12 boys are getting ready to travel with their head coach, who was also there last year when Oliverson nearly lost his life. He said the new motto felt appropriate based on what they’ve all watched Easton battle over the past year.

“You look at Easton and the situation that he’s in. I mean, the kid shouldn’t be here,” Hafen said.

The 13-year-old still can’t play baseball, and his dad, Jace Oliverson, said the year had been filled with love and blessing but still tough.

“We literally take it day by day with him,” Jace said. “So, we’re just grateful that after being given a zero percent chance, he’s here with us.”

Of the 12 boys on this year’s team, only five are returning from last year’s team.

Brogan Oliverson, Jake Tomlinson, Chaz Hickman, Brogan Coop, and Dash Avery are all closer now than ever before, partly because of what they went through last year on the field and partly because of their connection to Easton.

Snow Canyon Little League practicing on the field. (KSL TV)

Brogan Oliverson is Easton’s younger brother and Coop was Easton’s roommate last year when he tragically fell from the top bunk bed.

“After he was hurt, it was just like all of us compacted together to like to pray with him, so it just brought us more as a team to fight for Easton and fight for us,” Coop said.

If the boys wanted a win last year, it pales in comparison to how the team feels now, and they’re confident. They said they’re doing it for themselves and their buddy who didn’t get the chance to play in the big game last year and who they still consider a brother.

The team will play their first game a week from today in San Bernardino at 1 pm.

As you can imagine, it costs the team a lot to travel. They have a Venmo set up if you would like to help these boys out, you can Venmo them @SnowCanyon-LittleLeague-1. Their games will air on ESPN and ESPN+.

Rupee poised for monthly decline, premiums little changed in July - Reuters

little.indah.link

MUMBAI, July 31 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee dropped on Monday and was poised to record a monthly decline on the back of a central bank that seemingly does not want the currency to appreciate much.

The rupee was at 82.2625 to the dollar by 11:02 IST, down from 82.2475 on Friday. The local currency is down 0.3% in July.

The rupee twice this month hit the 81.70-81.75 range, following which it had to contend with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank bought dollars around that level via public sector banks to prevent the rupee from appreciating more, according to traders.

The RBI's determination offset the foreign equity inflows of more than $5.5 billion and a weaker dollar index.

With the RBI "not in a mood to relent," the rupee looks confined to an 81.70-82.50 range for the time being

The dollar index was down 1% in July amid expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve rate cycle is over. Softer U.S. inflation readings have prompted investors to bet that this month's Fed rate hike will be the last.

"We suspect that further signs of a significant easing in the monthly core CPI (consumer price index) numbers for July and August will ultimately persuade the Fed to hold fire for the remainder of this year particularly," Capital Economics said in a note last week.

A rise in oil prices was cited another reason for the rupee's fall this month. Brent crude futures, up about 12.5% this month, are headed for their best performance in more than a year.

USD/INR forward premiums barely changed month-on-month, with the 1-year implied yield at 1.66% amid possible sell/buy swaps by the RBI and a dovish Fed outlook.

Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock Shares Photos of Her Dreamy Beach Wedding: 'Married My Soul Mate' - PEOPLE

little.indah.link

Leigh-Anne Pinnock is reliving the Glory Days!

On Saturday, the Little Mix member, 31, shared a look at her June wedding to husband Andre Gray — with some never-before-seen photos of the lovely beach-set ceremony in Jamaica.

Over two months after PEOPLE confirmed that Pinnock wed her soccer player husband this summer, and after Pinnock revealed the news herself to fans in a newsletter, Mixers now have a visual for just how pretty the dreamy beach wedding was.

"03/06/23 I married my soul mate 🥺❤️," Pinnock captioned a post featuring 10 images of her wedding day on Instagram.

The first photo in the slideshow shows the married pair sharing their first kiss as husband and wife, with Pinnock wearing a stunning white dress with a massive train.

Gray, 32, opted for a white blazer and black trousers during his big day, and the now-married couple were surrounded by boxes full of white flowers with a decorated tree in the center of each.

Other images show the duo holding hands down the aisle, sharing a kiss on the beach, and a close-up shot of Pinnock's dress in all its partly-sheer glory.

Pinnock, who wore her veil over a sleek bun, had her bridesmaids wear baby blue dresses to mark the occasion. And as a few of the wedding photos illustrate, the scenery itself looked just as dreamy as the outfits, with Gray and Pinnock surrounded by a bright sky and beautiful waves.

Back in June, Pinnock wrote to fans before the release of her debut solo single "Don't Say Single" that "so much has happened since we last caught up."

“First of all … I’m a married woman! Eeeek! Andre and I had the most incredible wedding surrounded by love in a place that’s so special to us. Thank you for showing us so much love and support.”

She opened up about her nuptials during an appearance on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show this month and revealed that she and Gray exchanged vows in Jamaica.

"How beautiful. All my friends and family came to Jamaica and we got hitched,” she told host Greg James.

The pair's wedding followed a three-year engagement, as Pinnock announced that Gray had popped the question in May 2020, after he proposed midway through their fourth-anniversary celebration.

"Guys.. wtf has just happened... He bloody did it, and I said yes," Pinnock announced on Instagram at the time. "I'm marrying my soul mate, the man of my flipping dreams.... am lost for words, so I think I'm just going to go cry some more. "@andregray_ I love you so much. My world is literally complete."

In August 2021, Pinnock revealed on Instagram that she and Gray — who plays for Aris F.C. and the Jamaica Football Federation — welcomed their first children together, a set of twins. "We asked for a miracle, we were given two... 🥺🖤 Our Cubbies are here 😍🖤16/08/21 🖤," Pinnock captioned the black-and-white photo at the time.

Your patriotic washing machine's surprising little secret - Stuff

little.indah.link

Never air your dirty laundry in public, and always respect a patriotic washing machine.

It was in 2020 during the extreme boredom of the Covid lockdown that I discovered my washing machine’s dirty little secret.

After a few pushes of the buttons a Fisher & Paykel washing machine could play God Defend New Zealand.

I’m lucky I had a Fisher & Paykel washing machine nearby, as this blew out my mind. I then had to rinse and repeat after discovering my patriotic machine also played two other national anthems, Advance Australia Fair and The Star Spangled Banner.

READ MORE:
* The cost of whiteware appliances has reached an all time high
* Haier, Samsung and Fisher & Paykel drop in Consumer NZ ratings following introduction of new lifetime criteria
* Blue chip stocks A2 Milk, F&P Healthcare, Meridian weigh on NZX

And this isn’t all, this innocent looking piece of whiteware is a veritable jukebox.

In the 1990s, at a time when grunge was huge and an American president innocently played with his saxophone, something interesting was going down at Fisher & Paykel, faster than The Last Action Hero at the box office.

The company was grappling with one of the world’s great puzzles, how to get customers to interact with machines on display in retail stores.

An evocative file photo of my Fisher and Paykel washing machine. It has been cleaned since this photo was taken. Maybe.

Hamish McNeilly/Stuff

An evocative file photo of my Fisher and Paykel washing machine. It has been cleaned since this photo was taken. Maybe.

I don’t know anything about engineering or retail, but from a personal experience the only interaction I have when shopping for washing machines was to lift the lid, and stare at the price.

Perhaps aimed at shoppers like myself, the team at Fisher & Paykel decided to programme the national anthems of their home markets of New Zealand and Australia.

They were selected, Neil Cheyne, Fisher & Paykel reliability and compliance general manager, said: ‘‘in recognition of the company’s history and legacy, along with America’s Star Spangled Banner”.

But the story of the anthem playing machines unfolded before that, and coincided with ‘‘the emergence of our SmartDrive technology’’.

‘’The SmartDrive programs which powered the motor were coded onto non-rewritable chips, with limited storage.’’

This is where it gets interesting.

One of the engineers involved in the SmartDrive project noticed that the software didn’t quite fill the capacity of the chip.

Hacking the mainframe of my Fisher and Paykel washing machine led me on a journey of discovery.

Hamish McNeilly/Stuff

Hacking the mainframe of my Fisher and Paykel washing machine led me on a journey of discovery.

So what did this unnamed Kiwi legend do?

Well, that person decided to surprise their team by programming a popular movie theme song into the code, Cheyne said.

But this unnamed theme (gah!) remains buried deep within the software, ‘‘dormant and inaccessible to the user’’, Cheyne said. Double gah!

I was picking the movie theme song Jaws, but maybe that would scare people when trying to locate that missing sock at the bottom of their washing machine.

That coded Easter egg was touched on briefly in a 2013 Stuff story, which said: ‘’The washing machines could also play two theme songs from 1980s science fiction movies if there was a power surge’’.

So Jaws is dead in the water. Close Encounters? No, that close encounter was in 1977. Ghostbusters? Well, who you going to call on this topic?

It has to be Star Wars right?? Despite the film first screening in 1977, Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980, and then Return of the Jedi three years later. So that qualifies, not that the company is confirming.

So that unnamed engineer’s slice of Kiwi ingenuity led to led Fisher & Paykel revisiting the idea, and is why my machine has three programmable national anthems, and quite possible two hidden sci-fi classic from 80s movies.

Meanwhile, my washing machine turned jukebox was also suspiciously quiet on the subject, despite my forlorn attempt at hacking its mainframe.

But I am grateful that unlike some machines, according to one Reddit thread, my machine does not have the ability to play Crazy Frog by Axle F as it may predate the worst known song in human history.

If you know more about the hidden tunes, I’d love to hear from you. Please email me at hamish.mcneilly@stuff.co.nz

And if you want to play God Defend New Zealand, put your machine in demo mode by holding down "power" and the "advance" buttons together. It will soon light-up like a Christmas tree.

You should then hold "wash temp up" for two seconds, and please remain standing.

The unidentified 49-year-old woman called Little Egg Harbor police around 5:10 a.m., saying she thought someone was breaking into her Whitemarsh Court apartment, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Little Egg Harbor Township Chief of Police James Hawkins said.

Responding officers forced their way into the apartment, where they found the woman, a 52-year-old man, and a dog dead with gunshot wounds, Billhimer and Hawkins said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the man, who was conscious when police arrived, was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he later died.

Police believe the man shot the woman and the dog, then turned the gun on himself.

Prosecutor Billhimer and Chief Hawkins acknowledge the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department, Little Egg Harbor Police Department Detective Bureau, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office, for their combined and collective assistance in connection with this investigation.
