U.S. stock futures were largely flat on Wednesday evening as Wall Street prepared for the final day of the year.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 15 points, or less than 0.1%. Those for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 were little changed.

The muted move in futures comes at the end of a relatively quiet week on Wall Street, capping a remarkable year for the stock market.

Equities fell sharply in February and March as the Covid pandemic spread outside of China. The S&P 500 suffered its most rapid 30% drawdown on record.

But after bottoming out in late March, and amid unprecedented action by the Federal Reserve to shore up the credit markets, stocks rebounded dramatically and have ripped off a series of record highs before the end of year.

Ahead of the final session of 2020, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 43.44% year to date, while the S&P 500 and Dow rose 15.52% and 6.56%, respectively.

The latest leg higher for the market has been fueled by the rollout of vaccines and a new economic relief package from Congress, though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has blocked efforts to increase the amount of direct stimulus payments to $2,000 from $600.

A rising worry in recent weeks is a new strain of the deadly virus that was first identified in the United Kingdom and has been confirmed in Colorado and California. U.K. officials have said the strain appears to be more contagious than earlier versions of the virus.

However, experts and health policy leaders have said that the existing vaccines should be effective against the new strain. Some have also said that companies should be able to adjust the vaccines to work against new strains if that is necessary.

"With the flu vaccines, we actually have mutations occurring within the seasons and companies adjusting to that. So while I don't want to downplay the seriousness of these mutant strains that are current with Covid-19, I think this is an area where we have a lot of expertise in, in industry and in science, and I think we'll be able to tackle it," said Hartaj Singh, a biotechnology analyst at Oppenheimer, on CNBC's "Closing Bell."

Investors will get a key piece of economic data on Thursday morning with the latest report on initial jobless claims. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones are expecting 828,000 initial claims, which would be a slight increase from the previous reading and still drastically higher than before the pandemic.

Samuel Little, the man the FBI has called the most prolific serial killer in the history of the United States, died Wednesday at age 80, a law enforcement source confirmed to "60 Minutes." The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Little, who in 2018 confessed to 93 murders over more than three decades, had been in jail since 2014 for the murders of three women he strangled. He confessed to the other murders under questioning by Ranger James Holland – the story of those confessions was told by "60 Minutes" in October 2019.

"Probably be numerous people who are-- been convicted and sent to penitentiary on my behalf," Little told "60 Minutes" when asked why he confessed to the murders. "I say, if I can help get somebody out of jail, you know, God might smile a little bit more on me."

Little told authorities that he targeted prostitutes, drug addicts, and other women on the fringes he believed the police wouldn't work too hard to find.

"They was broke and homeless and they walked right into my spider web," Little said in 2019. "I don't think there was another person that did what I liked to do. I think I'm the only one in the world. That's not an honor. That's a curse."

Ben Roethlisberger smiled during his weekly Zoom call with the media and admitted he doesn't mind that he will get a breather this week.

Roethlisberger isn't playing against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, instead resting as the Steelers have already wrapped up a playoff spot and the AFC North Division title.

"I'm excited to get a little bit of rest this week," said Roethlisberger.

With Roethlisberger resting, Mason Rudolph will get the start on Sunday in Cleveland, seeing action for only the third time in 2020. Rudolph previously played sparingly in the Week 6 game against Cleveland and in Week 9 at Dallas. He has completed three of the four passes he attempted for nine yards.

Roethlisberger said he will be there in a support role for Rudolph, helping the third-year signal caller any way he can.

"I will be here for Mason, for Josh (Dobbs), whoever it may be," said Roethlisberger. "Kind of like last year (when Roethlisberger was injured). That is the approach I want to take. I never want to step on toes, but I will be available for questions, to help.

"I have already talked to Mason about that. That is going to be my role this week is to really try and do everything I can to help them and to get them prepared for this game."

Last year Rudolph started in a Week 11 matchup against the Browns on Thursday Night Football, struggling in a 21-7 loss where he threw four interceptions and was sacked four times. The game was also marred by an incident near the end that resulted in the ejection of multiple players, including Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett.

"There are a couple of ways you can go about it," said Roethlisberger of how Rudolph can handle this game. "You can put it behind you and treat it like a typical quarterback that has to have a short memory. You just go out there and whatever happened last year, there is going to be a lot of hoopla about it, just put it out of our mind and go focus on this year, this game, this team.

"Or you can go take it as motivation that you want to go out and put it on them and win this football game. It's really each man has to decide how he wants to approach it. I know from talking to Mason and knowing Mason he wants to go out and win this football game. He is going to do everything he can for this team. This is an awesome opportunity for him to get out and show what he can do."

With Roethlisberger out last season due to his elbow injury, Rudolph played in 10 games, starting eight, and completed 176 of 283 passes for 1,765 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. While he has been limited in 2020, Roethlisberger said he has seen growth in him.

"I think he has gotten better every year in terms of understanding and knowing the offense, reads, throws," said Roethlisberger. "He's physically gifted, we know that. He's smart. We know he can make all of the throws and do things. Ways I have seen in game, during the TV timeout or whatever, that little huddle on the sideline, that is a time input is coming, from Randy (Fichtner), Coach (Matt) Canada, Josh Dobbs. Mason has gotten to the point the last few weeks he is chiming in of thoughts and plays that 'Hey Ben, what about this.' I think that shows growth and maturity of a guy that understands the offense and what we are trying to do on a week to week basis. I think that has been really, really good."

Roethlisberger also said Rudolph has the ability to adapt if need be.

"He knows the no huddle package," said Roethlisberger. "We've had it for a while. There are some changes we have made. He is aware of it. If we need to go to that mode, he doesn't see it the same way I do, I don't see it the same way he does. No quarterback sees the game the same as another quarterback. If it comes down to running the no huddle and him calling plays that he sees, it might look similar to what I do, but it might look completely different. He might have a group of plays he likes that are completely different than mine. I am sure if it comes to that, he knows it well enough he can make it happen."

The Portland Trail Blazers are not finished making moves, exercising the fourth-year option of Anfernee Simons and the third-year option of Nassir Little.

The Portland Trail Blazers have continued to make moves this season. After having a busy offseason they have exercised the options of Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little. This ensures that both players are guaranteed another year in the league.

Simons, who is currently playing his third year with the Blazers has seen a drop in minutes this season. Last season he averaged 8.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 20.7 minutes per game. In the first two games, Little has only played 7.5 minutes per game due to all the Blazers backcourt players being healthy.

Little, who is entering his second NBA season has not played yet due to health and safety protocols. He averaged 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 11.9 minutes per game in his rookie season. As a 6’5″ power forward, Little is going to struggle to break into the rotation when he comes back.

Why the Portland Trail Blazers exercised these options.

The first reason that these options were exercised has to be money. The Blazers have $130 million in salary for next season, with only nine players on the books. Simons is going to earn $3.9 million and Little is only at $2.3 million for next season.

On top of this, Little is one of the few players on the roster who can step into the playmaking duties should either Damian Lillard or CJ McCollum get hurt. The way the Blazers roster is set up, he is a good insurance policy.

However, if the Blazers need to make a trade to make a push for a deeper playoff run, Simons is a good option to include as a part of it. His $3.9 million contract is an easy one to include in a deal, should the Blazers choose to go that way.

His shooting certainly justifies more court time. He is shooting the 3-ball at 40.0 percent on the season. While two games are a small sample size, Little is trying to make the most of his opportunities.

Little, on the other hand, is a different story He is not going to have much of an impact on the Blazers lineup all season. He will probably only receive junk time minutes, and that is if CJ Elleby does not take them all.

Little will probably be a part of a trade with his contract being used to make the money work. The team that he is traded to will be able to assess whether he can help them next season. If not then they simply will not exercise his 2022-23 team option.

The Blazers are looking at now as they believe they are able to take a run at the title. If the game they played against the Los Angeles Lakers in late December is anything to go by, then they are right. However, with the way their roster is set up with the top-heavy contracts of Lillard and McCollum, they are also looking to the future and how they will fit quality players under the cap.
