It doesn’t seem like that long ago when The Lean Startup by Eric Ries took the world by storm. The book gave average people like me hope.

It showed me and people across the world that is was possible to start a business, regardless of circumstance.

It’s been almost a decade since The Lean Startup was released, but the hope it instilled and the lessons it taught still live on today.

Thousands of people ask this question every day: What is the best business to start with little money?

I wanted to share what I believe should be your top three choices if you are attempting to start a business but have little capital to back it up. Here are the three best businesses to start with very little money.

Note : All of the below are service-based businesses. These typically have the lowest overhead, making them perfect candidates for people with little startup capital. Each of these businesses will likely require you to challenge yourself and learn new skills. It’s difficult, but not impossible. Welcome to entrepreneurship.

1. Tax, accounting and/or bookkeeping services require little capital

I’m sure you have seen this one a hundred times. There is a reason: not only does it have low overhead as mentioned above, it also comes with higher-than-average profit margins and a massive customer base. This business does require training, but not necessarily an advanced degree. Expert tip — work one tax season with H&R Block. They will pay you to go through their training programs, which are amazing, and you’ll learn everything you need to know to get started with this business.

2. Web design, graphic design and/or Search Engine Optimization

This is another business that has a large customer base and good profit margins. It will require some training, but there are a large number of courses on websites like Udemy, and even free tutorials on YouTube. This business makes the list simply because as an entrepreneur, these are skills that will set you up for success in every project and business venture you take on. Embrace the learning experience and enjoy the ride.

3. Social media management and growth services

This is one of the hottest topics in business today. Businesses have realized the value of having quality social media accounts across the board. If you can learn to create quality content, grow social accounts and drive traffic with those accounts, you easily have a six-figure business on your hands. Expert tip — start by focusing on and learning about one social media platform. Once you have a system in place that works, start offering the service. This allows you to start bringing on customers and earning while you are learning. This is another entrepreneurial skill that will set you up for long term success.

These three opions offer a combination of low overhead, large customer bases, high profit margins and valuable entrepreneurial skills. They can thrive with very little startup capital, and should be at the top of every entrepreneur's list.

When you have an idea or passion for a business — but little money — ask yourself these questions before committing.

1.   Is this a service-based business?
2.   Does this business have low overhead?
3.   Are there a lot of people who need this service?
4.   Are the profit margins acceptable?
5.   Does this venture provide a skill that will benefit me long-term as an entrepreneur?

If you can answer these questions in the affirmative, you have a viable business idea — one you can possibly get off the ground with little startup capital.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A stretch of Calle Ocho in Little Havana is back open after a protest spilled into the streets.

An anti-communism demonstration took place in front of the Versailles restaurant Saturday afternoon.

The group had a permit for a 50-person rally, but many more showed up.

Police say despite the large crowd the protest was relatively peaceful.

“As of right now we can say that there are people here continue demonstrating in front of the Versailles restaurant, but everyone appears to be peaceful and they’re very joyous,” said Miami Police Kenia Fallat.

Several people were detained, but ultimately released.

The demonstration is in support of freedom of expression protests happening this week in Cuba.

Syrian Constitutional Talks Resume With Little Prospect of Breakthrough - Voice of America

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - U.N.-mediated talks on drafting a new constitution for Syria get under way Monday with little prospect of the country’s warring parties arriving at an agreement anytime soon.

This coming week, government and opposition delegates of the Syrian constitutional committee will meet to thrash out elements of a political document that could pave the way toward national elections in this war-torn country.

The U.N. special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said this process is moving ahead much more slowly than he hoped for because of mutual distrust between the two opposing parties. He said this is not surprising after 10 years of brutal conflict.

“We know that we have not lived up to the expectations of the Syrian people in making the progress that is necessary to end the suffering for the Syrian people. So, it is my hope that with the relative calm that we are seeing in Syria now, despite all the daily violations, that it should be possible to focus more heavily on the political process and all the elements of Security Council Resolution 2254,” he said.

One of the elements in that resolution calls for U.N. supervised elections to be held after the adoption of a constitution. Syria’s civil war has killed an estimated 400,000 people and caused 5.6 million to flee as refugees. Another 6.2 million are internally displaced.

Pedersen said building trust among the government and opposition negotiators is crucial. Doing so, he said, could open the door to a broader political process and permit discussions to move forward on several important issues.

“One of the obvious issues that we are hoping to make progress on is the file of abductees, detainees and missing persons. And my hope is that if we can continue to build trust within the constitutional committee, that that could have a positive impact also on the other issues and that then could play positively back on the work that we are doing in the constitutional committee,” said Pedersen.

To a large extent, Pedersen notes that progress depends on the Syrians themselves but also on having international support for the unfolding political process.

Six Buddhist temples vandalized across Little Saigon this month - Los Angeles Times

Thai Viet Phan, who was recently elected to the Santa Ana City Council, was stunned when she received the advisory notice from the Buddhist temple she attended growing up.

Huong Tich Temple had been vandalized and Santa Ana police had deemed it a hate crime. It was the sixth temple to be vandalized in the area in the last month.

Outside the temple’s entrance, 15 stone Buddha and Bodhisattva statues were defaced with black spray paint. On the back of one read “Jesus” vertically down the spine.

“It’s beyond trespass. It’s beyond vandalism. It’s a hate crime targeted at the Vietnamese American Buddhist community, and we will not stand for that,” Phan told reporters at a news conference held outside a temple in Westminster on Saturday.

Growing up, she attended Sunday school in her small neighborhood temple, Huong Tich, and she made an effort to rekindle relations with her temple while recently campaigning for a seat on the City Council, where she will serve as the city’s first Vietnamese American council member.

Two female suspects, wearing face masks and armed with cans of spray paint, were caught on video surveillance footage late Monday evening trespassing and defacing statues at the Santa Ana temple. Both suspects were seen in dark clothing, one donned a blue Patriots beanie and the other a black beanie.

Local elected officials and police officers gathered on Saturday at Dieu Ngu Temple in Westminster.

Police investigating all six incidents of vandalism say they could be related and are pursuing at least two suspects involved. Three temples have been vandalized with black spray paint in Garden Grove, two in Santa Ana and one in Westminster.

A similar vandalism incident of five temples in Santa Ana and two houses of worship in Garden Grove occurred in 2018, resulting in a woman arrested for breaking off pieces of the statues. Police officials from the three cities have begun a coordinated investigation and do not believe the person involved in the earlier incident is related to the current hate crime.

Sgt. Gil Hernandez said Santa Ana police have stepped up patrols at temples across the city and have been sharing evidence with neighboring police departments.

“The damage to property is not what keeps us up at night or what bothers us the most, it’s the hate crime in itself and the negative impact to interfaith relations in our community,” the Venerable Vien Hay of the Dieu Ngu Temple, one of the affected temples in Westminster, said in Vietnamese.

The latest incident comes one month after the county released its 2019 hate crimes report, which showed a 24% rise in hate crimes from the year prior. Last year also marked the fifth straight year of increasing hate crimes in the county. With the ongoing pandemic and backlash targeting Asian Americans, officials worry the number of hate crimes targeting AAPI will continue to grow.

Garden Grove City Councilwoman Diedre Nguyen, who organized Saturday’s news conference, said she worried of what the hate crimes may signal for her community. Nguyen said she was heartbroken to see thousands of dollars in damages made to these places of peace and worship.

“I’m mostly scared that because of our culture, many people won’t feel comfortable reporting these incidents,” Nguyen said, “but I want to get out the message that they should if they know anything.”

Loveland’s CreatorSpace is looking to little libraries to raise a little money. To help raise money for the shared creative building, Loveland CreatorSpace had local Loveland artists decorate pre-built little libraries to be sold to the public.

Mary Connole, coordinator at Loveland CreatorSpace, said the idea for the libraries started as a plan to hold a class to teach people how to make them.

“Then the pandemic hit,” Connole said. “So we had to think of an alternative approach because we had all these pieces of wood cut and ready to be made.”

She said the idea came up to use the little libraries as a fundraiser for the space. After they were built by Andrea Pinedo, Loveland CreatorSpace facilitator, all seven of the libraries were then uniquely decorated and painted by local artists.

“We had all these pre-cut pieces so I assembled them from what was there,” Pinedo said. “It was a little tricky because I didn’t have the actual plans.”

Contemporary Loveland artist Ana Maria Botero said for her library, she leaned on her love of contemporary arts, shapes and colors. She said she took the library that was given to her, opened up some holes for light and for some fun and painted across it.

“I think as an architect,” Botero said. “So I start with a tracing paper and start making drawings and designs and I chose the one that I think is the strongest.”

Loveland artist Tracie Jenkins said in her art she uses a lot of vintage photos and bookcases, which she translated into her library. She said she decorated hers to be cheerful, bright and bold.

“I wanted something that if you were walking down the sidewalk would be very bright and draw your attention to it and just be something that someone would want to put in front of their house,” Jenkins said. “(I was) just trying to make it appealing and fun for all ages.”

Pinedo cut the designs into her library with a computer numerically controlled laser, something that she said the funds will go toward for CreatorSpace.

“I am usually trying to use (a) message to my advantage,” Pinedo said. “In this case I decided to make something really intricate that would take you a really long time to cut by hand, but the CNC laser can do pretty quickly.”

Artists who worked on the libraries agreed that supporting places like CreatorSpace, especially during the pandemic, is incredibly important.

Botero said supporting businesses like Artworks of Loveland and Loveland CreatorSpace, which she sees as a fundamental place to grow, is important for people of all ages.

“Those places spark creativity,” Botero said. “Creativity is a way of life and is the ability to solve problems in every situation. It is not just to create a piece of art … it is just that your mind (is) being trained to solve problems for everything happening. I think for children and for families to access those places and play is so important for the future, for being able to handle different things.”

Jenkins said CreatorSpace offers artists and the community a place to explore different art mediums without having to spend the money or find the space for equipment.

“Not only is it a place for our community to use for those resources, it is a great place to meet new people and to try new things,” Jenkins said. “A lot of the machines and the different things they offer are things you can’t have if you live in an apartment.”

Pinedo also said the technology, tools and space that CreatorSpace provides help artists and community members grow and learn new things.

“There is so much technology out there that people want to be able to use and want to get experience with and it is being used increasingly for people’s hobbies, but a lot of jobs these days,” Pinedo said. “We have a space where people can make stuff, they can borrow our tools, they can store things if they need to. That is pretty important for being able to (bring) technology for everyone.”

Connole said the members who use CreatorSpace are what keeps it going, and work like the little libraries shows that.

“The members here are really quite remarkable,” Connole said. “They are not just skilled and intelligent, they are incredibly generous with what they can do. Our members jump on the occasion and the opportunity to help this community in any way (they) can. Whatever we can do with our skills and knowledge to give back to the community (we do).”

According to the Loveland CreatorSpace website, each library costs $400 and will include a 501c3 nonprofit organization receipt upon purchase. There is also a laser-art picture frame created by Elza Simpson for sale at $125.

LITTLE FALLS, NJ – As a difficult year draws to a close, the business community in Little Falls is determined to shine brightly.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on many businesses and will make the upcoming holiday shopping season more important this year than in the past. In hopes of drawing shoppers into the business district – and raise the spirits of local shop owners – LittleFallsBiz is adding some shimmer and shine to the downtown by decorating trees with glittering solar lights.

The local business association is also asking merchants, professionals and restaurants to put lights in their storefronts to help “Light Up The Town.” “This will give a more festive feel during what looks like may be a very hard holiday season,” Karen Winick, the business association’s president, said.

LittleFallsBiz is poised to kick off an initiative encouraging people to spend money locally this season.The “Shop Local” campaign aims to put a spotlight on the independent businesses located in Little Falls and urge the community to shop small, dine local and show some support to Main Street.

Over the past several months, social distancing requirements, mandated closures and other safety measures have prompted many to shop online instead of at brick and mortar shops.

Since the onset of the outbreak, Winick said local stores have generally seen a decline in traffic, and at least three closures, including 2Sweet, Eclectic Flair and Albert John Hair Salon. “Restaurants in particular, especially with the weather getting colder, outdoor dining will be difficult,” she said.

But, local businesses are doing their best to bounce back and keep their doors – safely – open.

Restaurants have pivoted to running curbside pick-up and expanded delivery services and many businesses, like Iris Mind & Body and Pencilworks Studios, offer virtual classes.

The campaign’s launch coincides with Small Business Saturday. “If you can buy it local, skip Amazon!” said Winick, adding that there are “a wide variety of businesses and restaurants in town.”

Rhonda Mallek, owner of The Fine Grind, said, “’Shop Small’ means more this holiday season that ever before.”

“People need to understand that it isn’t just an expression to share on social media. This pandemic has affected family-owned local businesses in a very real way – many have closed and many are struggling,” she said, “if we all don’t make a conscious decision to spend money at local businesses, they are not going to make in through these tough economic times,” Mallek said.

And while the holiday season will undoubtedly be different in 2020, LittleFallsBiz has worked with other groups in town to revamp the traditional events into safe – and fun – celebrations for local families.

“Since we cannot have ‘Breakfast with Santa’ this year, we will be distributing to the kids approximately 200 shopping bags fill of holiday goodies which will include a list of all the holiday shopping offers in town for the adults, a kids holiday face mask, food for the reindeer, package cookies, a package of hot chocolate and any giveaways donated,” Winick said. The association and public library are also co-sponsoring a gingerbread house contest virtually. Since this year’s Fall Festival could not go on as planned, the association handed out free pumpkins with a goody bag to local youngsters, she said.

“Many of the businesses either sponsored or contributed something to the bag, which was a good way to promote the business to parents,” Winick said. Due to the pandemic, the association has waived membership fees for its 35 members and has made an effort to reach out to businesses to see if they need help or want to be included in any
advertising opportunities.

“Hopefully, when we all get back to some kind of normal, we will start a membership drive,” Winick said.
