Wally Campo, the Roger Corman regular who did his best Det. Joe Friday impersonation as Sgt. Joe Fink — and also served as the narrator — in the original The Little Shop of Horrors, has died. He was 99.

Campo died Jan. 14 of natural causes in Studio City, his son, musician Tony Campodonico, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Campo also played a goofball in Monte Hellman‘s Beast From Haunted Cave (1959) and appeared for director Burt Topper in Hell Squad (1958), Tank Commandos (1959) — where he was top-billed — and the Victor Buono-starring The Strangler (1964).

Campo showed up in the Corman-directed Machine-Gun Kelly (1958), Ski Troop Attack (1960) and Tales of Terror (1962) and in the Corman-produced Devil’s Angels (1967). Many of his movies were made at the filmmaker’s low-budget American International Pictures.

His acting credits also included Edward Dmytryk’s Warlock (1959), the Vincent Price-starring Master of the World (1961) and Shock Corridor (1963), directed by Sam Fuller.

Born Wallace Joseph Campodonico on April 23, 1923, in Stockton, California, he served during World War II and made it to Iwo Jima.

After attending the College of the Pacific, he came to Los Angeles in the 1950s and landed with the Orchard Gables Repertory Theatre Company in Hollywood, co-founded by husband and wife actors Paul Sorensen and Jacqueline May and others.

Campo met his future wife, actress Geraldine Matthews, there, and they worked together on stages around L.A., including the Showplace Theater in Studio City. He also taught acting at Orchard Gables and at his own Actors Workshop.

Campo directed documentaries in Africa, India and stateside and helmed one feature, Mark of the Gun (1969). Shot by László Kovács, it was released the same year as another film shot by the cinematographer, Easy Rider.

In addition to his son — who as a young actor portrayed Scotty Baldwin on ABC’s General Hospital — survivors include his daughter-in-law, Cheryl, and grandchildren Laurena and Jade.

The journey to the subway from the new Grand Central Madison train terminal, located 150 feet deep in the bedrock of Midtown, takes so long that many Long Island Rail Road riders will not save much time on their daily commutes.

Riders who get off at the new terminal’s tracks 15 stories below ground must ride up three escalators — including an enormous one that spans 182 feet diagonally between the station’s mezzanine and concourse. From there, it’s a winding walk to the lower-level dining area of Grand Central Terminal, then up to the subway platforms.

The journey to the subways in Grand Central, which was timed by a Gothamist reporter on Wednesday, is hardly faster than a subway ride from Penn Station.

MTA leaders and Gov. Kathy Hochul hailed the opening of the long-delayed station as a life-changing option for LIRR commuters bound for Manhattan’s East Side. Previously, those commuters had to travel to Penn Station before making the journey back east.

Peter Divine, who rides the LIRR from Oceanside five days a week for his job near Grand Central, was among the straphangers analyzing how much time the new station shaved off his commute.

“I’m trying to see if it’s worth it and I don’t know,” Divine said. “Those stairs are really steep. Imagine having a couple drinks in you and losing your balance? Forget it, you’re going to end up in the hospital.”

Gothamist had a similar idea. The walk from the lower-level train platforms at Grand Central Madison to the 4/5/6 subway platform at Grand Central took 11 minutes and 20 seconds.

The journey could have been shorter if one of the escalators on the LIRR platform had not broken down the same day the station opened. But a lack of foot traffic also sped up the walk.

Compare that to the subway trip from the 4/5/6 subway platforms at Grand Central to the LIRR platforms at Penn Station, which requires a ride on the Times Square shuttle and a transfer to the 1, 2 or 3 train.

That trip took 13 minutes.

That amounts to a difference of 100 seconds during regular, midday service — or roughly 14 hours of saved time per year for daily riders.

In the end, it takes roughly the same amount of time to get to the 4/5/6 platforms at Grand Central – whether getting off an LIRR train at Grand Central Madison or Penn Station.

LIRR riders who walked to the East Side from Penn Station will benefit the most from the new terminal. The stroll through Midtown between the LIRR platforms at Penn Station and the 4/5/6 subway platforms at Grand Central took Gothamist 20 minutes and 13 seconds.

The subterranean walk from Grand Central Madison to the 4/5/6 in Grand Central Terminal is nine minutes shorter. Over an entire year, that adds up to 78 hours of saved time for East Side commuters who ride five days a week.

The project cost $11.6 billion, a price that includes future plans to purchase more train cars for the new service, according to federal records.

When asked whether commuters will save any time at the opening of Grand Central Madison on Wednesday, Hochul touted the benefits of walking underground.

“We are a cold climate state, people might want to walk from Penn Station during a snowstorm or heavy rain or winds. Or they can come up through this beautiful escalator,” she said. “I would use that time as meditation time. Just use that two-minute experience, let your mind wander.”

The new terminal was designed to ease congestion at Penn Station once full service is up and running, as well as boost service on the LIRR. But construction began long before the COVID-19 pandemic decimated transit ridership in New York. LIRR ridership remains down roughly 40% compared to 2019.

“We can change the minds, the psychology of New Yorkers by giving them something magnificent they deserve,” Hochul said.

Last year, when Michael filmed The White Lotus season two in Taormina, Sicily, Victoria came along, exploring the area and marveling at the testa di moro pottery on the balconies, the nearby medieval village of Castelmola, and just the striking antiquity all around. “When we travel in Europe, we feel like we always fit right in because there’s so much history. There’s so much imbued with a very profound sense of beauty,” Victoria says.

Works from older periods of western art history in particular, she explains, were less about self-expression for the artist and more about capturing the earthly and the otherworldly. This speaks to her deeply. “Subject matters were always very spiritual. They were infused with things that had philosophical and spiritual value,” she says. “That’s why it’s very inspiring and it’s beautiful to live with, because it opens a door to a dimension that we very rarely touch upon as moderns.”

Michael and Victoria’s deep connection to the past is especially interesting given the fact that they are both practicing Buddhists. One of the tenets of the religion—which arose in ancient India and spread to Tibet, and later across the world—is the concept of samsara, or the cycle of death and rebirth that occurs until nirvana is reached. In Tibetan Buddhism, which the Imperiolis practice, the lamas (or spiritual leaders) are considered to be far along in their journey to the end of samsara. Their teacher is His Eminence Garchen Triptrul Rinpoche, whose picture appears in what Victoria calls “the Buddha room,” a former walk-in closet they converted into a meditation space.

“I made a huge sacrifice,” she jokes, “but it is truly the most important [room] for both of us. In the morning, a lot of times, we will meditate together. That’s the very first thing that we do.” The room is decorated in traditional yellow and red with religious paintings called thangkas that Victoria had made during a trip to Nepal in 2017.

“A lot of meditators go into little caves when they go on retreat, and it kind of reminds me of that,” Michael says. “It draws your mind into a quiet place just being there.” This kind of serenity is especially precious amidst the chaos of New York City, but the Emmy-winning actor and his wife are happy to be back in the Big Apple. “Living in New York without raising kids is a lot easier,” he says. “Having that kind of freedom and flexibility and spontaneity with the two of us has been really fun.”
