‘The Little Mermaid’ Star Melissa McCarthy Brings Down the House as ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ Debuts at CinemaCon - Yahoo Entertainment

Pour one out for the poor unfortunate souls who aren’t at CinemaCon. Attendees of the annual exhibition trade show were treated to the first-ever glimpse of Melissa McCarthy as Ursula in Disney’s upcoming “The Little Mermaid” remake, including a show-stopping rendition of the character’s signature number, “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

McCarthy didn’t perform live, but she came to Las Vegas to introduce a clip of the movie, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel. In the dazzling footage, McCarthy channels Tallulah Bankhead with pitch-perfect flair as the evil sea witch convinces Ariel to part with her voice. Sporting dramatic makeup and a short, purple-ish updo, Ursula whips around her tentacles and shimmies through the sea alongside her sidekicks Flotsam and Jetsam while belting the evil anthem. And yes, McCarthy, who is known more for her comedic chops than her singing talents, effortlessly hits all of the song’s high notes.

A live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 animated classic, “The Little Mermaid” tells the story of King Triton’s youngest daughter, who is fascinated with the world above. So Ariel makes a deal with her evil aunt Ursula to transform into a human in exchange for her dulcet pipes. She has three days to make a prince named Eric fall in love with her or she’ll turn back into a mermaid and belong to Ursula forever.

While on stage, McCarthy told the audience it was an honor to play one of Disney’s “most delicious and iconic” villains. “She’s dishy. She’s a conniving broad,” she says of Ursula. “You can’t help but love her at the same time.”

Along with Bailey and McCarthy, the voice cast includes Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian. Rob Marshall directed the film, which releases in theaters on May 26.

Disney has given numerous animated films the live-action treatment — including “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Mulan” and “Dumbo” — to varying degrees of box office success. During the studio’s CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday morning, crowds at Caesars Palace were treated to new footage from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” Pixar’s upcoming “Elemental” and Harrison Ford’s return in “Indiana Jones 5.”

“As we’ve seen with recent box office results, great stories never go out of fashion,” Disney’s distribution chief Tony Chambers told the room of theater owners, to loud applause. “And there is indeed no replacing the experience of a good story in a movie theater.”

Hailey Bieber and little black dresses are a match made in heaven. The closet staple is currently having a moment in Hailey's wardrobe, who has been spotted in different iterations of the classic dress style over the past month.

During a recent outing to Los Angeles celeb hotspot Giorgio Baldi with husband Justin Bieber, the Rhode founder once again relied on the LBD—this time with a twist.

The dress featured the requisite short hemline, but upended the traditional expectations of the LBD by including a structured halter that hung around the model's neck like a thick collar necklace. At the front, the neckline of the dress also curved downwards, sloping into a low-back silhouette. Hailey finished the look off with black suede pumps, ultra-sheer tights from Calzedonia, a black patent leather shoulder bag from Saint Laurent, and tiny gold hoop earrings.

Meanwhile, Justin went for a more laidback look. The "Peaches" singer wore a gray crewneck sweater, baggy white trousers, a black leather aviator jacket with dark brown fur trim on the collar, white slip-on sandals, a blue-and-white baseball cap, and black sunglasses.

The last time Hailey wore a LBD was earlier this month during a night out in New York City. Then, the model looked fabulous in a strapless mini with a bedazzled golden buckle at the bust.

Prior to that appearance, Hailey shared a look at another black dress from her closet via Instagram, in which she showed off an elegant suede piece by Ferragamo, which included long sleeves, a turtleneck, and a stunning open back.

Little League season is underway and one New Jersey town is introducing an ingenious new rule to crack down on misbehavior after parents were caught on camera berating and yelling at referees and umpires at youth games.

Referees and umpires are often volunteers and there's been an increase in resignations with the rise in shouting matches. It's an issue impacting the Little League players in Deptford Township, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia, where two volunteer umpires have quit in the last week.

"They're coming here, they're being abused, they don't need that. So they're walking away," Deptford Township Little League President Don Bozzuffi told Philadelphia ABC station WPVI.

So now, the Little League officials in Deptford Township have created an innovative new solution to combat the trend. If a parent or another spectator fights with an umpire, they have to volunteer to officiate themselves for at least three upcoming games.

"You’re not allowed to come onto our complex until you complete three umpire assignments. Once you do that, then we’ll let you come back," Bozzuffi explained.

"People are very comfortable making officials uncomfortable, so it's about time that we've reversed the trend and started making people uncomfortable who are harassing officials," said Brian Barlow, who founded Offside, a Facebook page that calls out bad behavior among youth sports parents.

Some parents in Deptford Township seem to be on board with the new rule.

"If the parents are going to be sitting there, yelling the whole entire game, they might as well use that energy out on the field," Kateland Tokley, a local resident and mother, told WPVI.

Little League International President and CEO Stephen Keener said he thinks the solution is a home run idea.

“Little League International expects its participants and fans to adhere to the highest level of sportsmanship while attending local league events. ... We applaud the volunteers at Deptford Township Little League for coming up with a creative, fun solution to shine a light on the importance of treating everyone with respect, on and off the Little League field,” Keener said.

If the rule goes into effect and someone has to volunteer to suit up, Deptford Little League officials say a certified umpire will also be on the baseball field to make sure any calls are correct. The local organizers say the point is for parents to see what it's like on the field and how the job might not be as easy as it looks.

It's hard to believe, but Prince Louis, the son of Prince William and Princess Kate, recently turned five years old. Which, considering the family history, means he's got between four and 68 years before possibly having to assume the throne. Plus, as it stands now, the only way Louis needs to worry about donning the crown is if sister Princess Charlotte, brother Prince George, father Prince William, and soon-to-be-coronated King Charles all abdicate the role.

So, as such, Prince Louis is entitled to have as normal a childhood as possible. And that includes what sounds like a fairly normal and grounded, albeit probably a bit expensive, fifth birthday party with his friends and family.

Us Weekly got the inside scoop on Louis's soiree, thanks to an exclusive insider source they have (we do not personally have an inside source on the birthday parties of children of royalty, but this author does know a guy who sometimes knows what the next Happy Meal toy is gonna be before it comes out, so we're hoping that will be useful at some point).

Their source reports that the party had "...had cakes and sandwiches for guests to taste, as well as plenty of balloon decorations." An entertainer was also on-hand "...to dazzle partygoers."

And for gifts? Us Weekly's source reports that "Louis received a Pickleball set and an outdoor obstacle course." At a time where his Grandpa is receiving priceless ancient relics as coronation gifts, it feels good to know that the kids of the royal family are getting the same kind of gifts people everywhere—albeit people slightly older than five years old, given the recent explosion of pickleball courts in adult communities—are getting this year.

I mean, sure, it's a bit weird to have strong feelings about what any five-year-old gets for their birthday, royal or not, but if we have to have feelings on such a thing, they might as well be positive ones.

On Sunday, a Little League baseball hit and signed by a 12-year-old in a game 19 years ago in New Jersey sold for $15,600 with Robert Edward Auctions.

That 12-year-old was Mike Trout.

Five years before Trout was selected in the first round of the 2009 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Angels -- a compensatory pick for Mark Teixeira signing with the New York Yankees in late 2008 -- he was a middle schooler already earning his nickname as the Millville Meteor.

The Trout signature -- years from its modern refinement -- is authenticated by JSA/James Spence Authentication and includes a notarized letter of provenance from the uncle, Kevin Trout. Another item included in the auction was a photograph of Trout in his Little League uniform, the earliest image of him as a ballplayer offered for sale.

"This is an incredible relic from the earliest days of Mike Trout's legendary career," said Brian Dwyer, president of Robert Edward Auctions. "It's like having one of Picasso's earliest sketches -- this baseball is part of Trout's origin story and is a one-of-a-kind piece of memorabilia for any Trout collector or superfan."

Through 20 games in 2023, Trout -- a three-time MVP and 10-time All-Star -- is leading the American League with a .440 on-base percentage. His 83.3 wins above replacement are 58th in MLB history and 15.9 more than any other active player.
