More than a week after pausing its season after players and coaches tested positive for the coronavirus, the Menomonee Falls Little League is resuming play.
"Evaluation of the situation has been ongoing, and I'm happy to report there haven't been any additional positive cases," Menomonee Falls Little League President Kristin Lauer wrote on the league's Facebook page July 30.
She said the league's executive board decided that games would resume Monday as long as there were no new cases.
The Menomonee Falls Little League announced it suspended the season July 23 after players and coaches contracted the coronavirus. Lauer said the suspension would be reevaluated July 30.
"Our season suspension was a precautionary move due to a few positive cases that had the potential to lead to more," Lauer said in an email to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
She also said the league implemented safety protocols since the season started in June to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. These measures included the limited use of dugouts, social distancing, hand sanitizing stations at every field and equipment disinfection after every use.
Other safety measures introduced this season, according to the league's website, are avoiding high-fives, fist bumps, handshakes and sharing personal items. Players are encouraged to use their own equipment. Players, coaches and umpires are also barred from chewing gum.
Only three players — the one up to bat, the batter on deck and the one to follow — are allowed in the dugout, along with one coach. The other coaches and players are lined up along the bench with helmets on in case of foul balls.
Lauer announced the Little League's Aces travel program will play its games, but there will be additional safety measures, including the closing of all bleachers, distancing concession workers from customers and encouraging mask use.
"Masks are not required at this time but that may be reviewed in the future," Lauer said.
There have been 81 coronavirus cases among newborns to 9-year-olds, according to Waukesha County data published Aug. 2. And among 10- to 19-year-olds in the county, there have been 505 cases, the third-highest age bracket of positive tests. That is higher than the age groups of 30-39, 40-49, 60-69, 70-79, 80-89 and 90 and older.
Lauer said updates to the league's schedule will be posted on its Facebook page.
