Tiny Rainey Street bar Little Brother opened a new walk-up kolache and coffee shop in South Austin as of Thursday, September 17. It’s found within the Maufrais lifestyle store at 1512 South Congress Avenue in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood.
The Little Brother bar and walk-up window serves sweet and savory kolaches from Lindsay O’Rourke, who is the executive pastry chef at sibling spots Better Half and Hold Out Brewing. Current flavors include a cherry/pistachio and a tasso ham with Swiss cheese. Expect other fillings such as mulled apple and pecan, cherry and chevre, pork cheek carnitas with asadero, and pastrami and egg.
For drinks, the bar will serve a full menu of espresso drinks and iced coffee. There isn’t any booze at this location. Because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the shop will function as a walk-up window with to-go orders placed in person. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
Maufrais is a lifestyle store from local husband-and-wife team Sean and Lauren Greenberg, whose family business, Allens Boots, is down the street. Located in the former space of Uncommon Objects, it sells items like customizable Stetson hats and vintage housewares, and has been used as a space to host workshops, art exhibits, and markets. At this time, the shop is open for in-person shopping, requiring masks for guests.
“We love that this amazing space is staying local,” co-owner Matthew Bolick tells Eater. “[Sean and Lauren] have such a killer eye for design, so the space looks incredible.”
Little Brother is the one of the many collaborations of powerhouse team Bolick, Matt Wright, and Grady Wright. The team also own Wright Bros. Brew & Brew on East Fifth and Better Half in Clarksville, which was Eater Austin’s Restaurant of the Year in 2018. The first location of Little Brother opened in a 367-square-foot space on Rainey Street in January 2019, followed by the on-site food truck Bummer Burrito in February 2020. The group opened brewery and restaurant Hold Out Brewing on the same property as Better Half in May 2020.
