New Haven native and football great Floyd Little is facing a difficult stretch in his battle against cancer, according to a report on social media Sunday.

Matthew Guitierrez of The Athletic tweeted at about the time of the noon kickoff of Sunday’s National Football League slate: “Update on Floyd Little, who is battling cancer. From his ex-teammate Pat Killorin: ‘Floyd and DeBorah are both going through a very difficult battle now and sure could use your prayers and good energies sent their way.’”

Now 78, Little was diagnosed with cancer in May. A page on gofundme.com, Friends of Floyd, has collected $132,915 toward a goal of $250,000 for his care since it was established May 17.

As a running back at Syracuse University, Little was named to the All-America team three times. Killorin was a center at Syracuse.

From 1967 to 1975, Little played for the Denver Broncos in the NFL.

Little was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010, and to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

A graduate of Hillhouse High School in New Haven, the fieldhouse there is named in his honor.
