New Middletown Elementary School has a new feature outside its building where students and community members can sit down and enjoy reading a book on a nice day. The Arts Alliance of Southern Indiana commissioned artist Jason Wright, of Laconia, to design a “little free library” on the school’s campus.
The Little Free Library News Rack Project converts old street newspaper distribution boxes into mini libraries to be placed in neighborhoods in Harrison, Floyd and Clark counties. The boxes are designed and created by local artists, schools or associations.
Partnering with the Arts Alliance of Southern Indiana to establish this Little Free Library was the Harrison County Public Library. It is the first to be established through a collaboration between the public library and the Arts Alliance and the 19th one overall.
Currently, there are 51 requests out for locations to place more, and 20 boxes are being created by artists to be placed in the near future. Each artist can put their own creative spin on the library, making each one different from the others.
The library at New Middletown Elementary, titled Relaxing with a Book, is the first one created through this program that features a bench attached to it. Wright said he hopes it can be a place where kids can sit for a while and read a book or enjoy time with friends.
The Little Free Library is stocked with reading books, coloring books, art supplies, math flashcards, etc. These resources are free to all community members and will be restocked regularly by the Arts Alliance for an entire year. After that year, NMES principal Wendy Carter said she hopes to make this a community project in which everyone is welcome to take a book and leave a book for others to read.
Georgetown Elementary School received a Little Free Library, courtesy of the Arts Alliance, in September. The artist for Wish upon a Star was Christine Euker.
Corydon resident Carrie Cooke Ketterman was the artist for the Classic Story Books library located at Northhaven Elementary School in Jeffersonville.
The Arts Alliance relies on grants, fundraising and donations from the community to fill the gaps of need.
