GRAND RAPIDS, MI - If you can’t remember when you’ve seen this paltry amount of snow this far into a Michigan winter, you can be forgiven. After all, the last time some cities in the state have seen so little snow and cold at this point was 89 years ago.
National Weather Service meteorologists in the Grand Rapids office shared some old records to show that city is sitting in a near-record spot.
As of this weekend, Grand Rapids has received 9.4 inches of snow for the season. The record low amount of snow for this far into the season? That was the winter of 1931-32, which had 7.8 inches of snow by this spot on the calendar.
“All locations are well under their average snow to date, and the cold temps have been limited,” NWS staff said in a Facebook post. “The last time we saw a lack of cold and snow to this degree, this far into the season, was the warm start to the ’31-’32 winter.”
That winter, Grand Rapids finally ended up with 41.1 inches of snow. “The back end of the winter was cold and a bit snowy after the warm and dry start.”
This winter, Grand Rapids also is running pretty warm. It has the second warmest low temp on record, too, with 14 degrees. Lansing’s winter also holds that second-warmest low temp spot, with 11 degrees for that city. The winner on the record books? Yep, the winter of 1931-32. Muskegon’s lowest minimum temp of 15 degrees and Battle Creek’s of 16 degrees are record-setting warmth this winter, the NWS said.
Snow totals are expected to increase for all these cities in the next 48 hours.
