WILLIAMSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- With rising temperatures and clear-blue skies, a group of locals decided it was a great day to get outside for a little hockey, on Crab Orchard Lake Saturday morning.
A rare opportunity in southern Illinois; as told, the last time was in 2018.
About a dozen guys came together for a pick-up game after spending several hours clearing snow pack to open up a rink.
The group is made up of friends and team members from the Southern Illinois Wombats, with member Tyson Baker saying, it's just having some fun and raising a little awareness that hockey happens, right here at home.
"It's a very diverse area, you can do about anything here, from 100-degrees in the summer to zero degrees in the winter," says Baker. "You're able to get out on these lakes and enjoy the Refuge and outdoors."
He adds the group hopes to get an ice-rink in the local area someday. The team travels to games in the St. Louis, Nashville and Indianapolis areas.
To see a listing of where they're playing next, you can find more information on their Facebook page.
