It’s been off for a couple of months, but there’s plenty of drama for “A Million Little Things” to pick up with.
The ABC series resumes its third season Thursday, and one of its interconnected Boston characters who remain impacted by recent events surely is Eddie Saville. Played by former “Grimm” star David Giuntoli, he’s a father, musician and recovering alcoholic now in a wheelchair after a hit-and-run, posing additional hurdles for him and his attorney wife Katherine (Grace Park) following their remarriage.
“It’s a real upheaval for Eddie,” the friendly Giuntoli said. “I tell the cast and the creators of the show that I think Eddie has the greatest storyline this season. He struggles more than he has previously, and he did struggle in past seasons. There are tremendous challenges, and he goes on quite a roller-coaster ride. As does David Giuntoli.”
A big part of that has been the actor’s education in using a wheelchair. “It’s a responsibility to tell the story of paralysis based on trauma accurately,” Giuntoli acknowledged. “I want to do justice to that experience, and I speak with a couple of people who have gone through it, paralyzed from the waist down to varying degrees. (Series creator and executive producer) D.J. Nash is trying to tell an honest story, and we don’t want to have a miraculous recovery. We really want to show Eddie going through this process.”
Certainly, the other main characters of “A Million Little Things” have ongoing trials as well. James Roday Rodriguez, Allison Miller, Romany Malco and Stephanie Szostak also continue in the ensemble cast, with Ron Livingston making the occasional flashback appearance as Jon … whose suicide started the series.
Admitting he “did not know her work” previously, Giuntoli arguably works most closely with Park. “We are two of the most different people, which we joke about all the time,” he mused, “but I think we’ve really come to respect each other. I love working with her, and I have no doubt she’s made me a better actor in our scenes.”
The Giuntoli family is busy these days, since the actor’s wife — Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch, who starred with him in “Grimm” — is The CW’s new Lois Lane in the series “Superman & Lois.” That and “A Million Little Things” both film in Vancouver, but the couple’s differing schedules make it a challenge for them to share time together along with their daughter, who just turned 2.
“I don’t work nearly as many hours on this as I did on ‘Grimm’,” Giuntoli said, “and Bitsie is now experiencing those work hours. It’s a good match, because I understand what’s going on and how she feels.”
