For the first time since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the NBA a year ago, the Detroit Pistons will start selling tickets to games at Little Caesars Arena beginning with a March 17 contest against the Toronto Raptors.
Tickets starting at $47 go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday through Ticketmaster, the team announced Wednesday.
There is a limit of 750 fans per game in the "initial phase" of welcoming back fans to the arena, the Pistons said. The move comes a day after Michigan health officials announced loosened restrictions on indoor and outdoor entertainment venues as cases of COVID-19 decline and vaccine distribution increases.
"We appreciate the extensive coordination with, and guidance from, public health and medical experts, government officials, and the National Basketball Association over the past several months," said Tim Padgett, vice president of venue operations safety with Ilitch-owned Olympia Entertainment, which controls the venue. "We have developed and invested in a plan that has allowed us to welcome back fans safely to our venues."
Seating will be physically distanced at the 19,515-seat arena, and all fans over the age of 2 must wear a mask except when eating and drinking in their seats. Fans must complete a health screening online within 24 hours of attending a game. All bags are prohibited, tickets are mobile-only and all purchases will be cashless.
At Little Caesars Area, Olympia has implemented what have become standard safety measures amid the pandemic, including hand sanitizer stations and plexiglass shields. The company has not said how much it has invested to ready the arena for the public's return.
The Downtown Development Authority, which owns the arena, approved late last year about $200,000 for Olympia to install ticket scanning pedestals, X-ray machines and reverse ATMs to cater to cashless transactions.
"The modifications also provide material improvement to attendee comfort and convenience by enabling faster and more efficient service," according to minutes from a DDA meeting. "Other modifications will provide enhanced disinfecting measures at the venue that will also mitigate the spread of Covid 19 virus."
The NBA abruptly halted its season March 12 after the coronavirus began spreading through the league and the nation. Playoffs, in which the Pitons did not take part, were eventually staged in a "bubble" in Florida before the Pistons kicked off the 2021 season on Dec. 23.
