The Wabash baseball team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri Saturday to play a doubleheader against second-ranked Washington University. The Little Giants came up short in game two in a 15-9 slugfest after losing game one 5-0 to the host Bears.
Wabash (18-15) scored nine runs on 13 hits in the second contest against Washington University (24-3). The Little Giants recorded three extra-base hits, including a three-run homer by Drew Prather in the sixth inning that cut the WashU lead to 13-4. The home run was Prather's first of his collegiate career.
Cameron Martin started the scoring for Wabash in the fifth inning with an RBI single up the middle to score Prather with two outs. The Little Giants added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by AJ Reid to drive in Blake Juerling from second.
Juerling added an RBI single as part of a four-run eighth inning for Wabash. Martin picked up a second RBI with a double down the left-field line before scoring on a two-run single by Andrew Jumonville. Martin finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Prather picked up three hits and three RBI with three runs scored in five at bats. Juerling and Jumonville both collected two hits. Nick Logan added the final hit of the contest for the Little Giants.
The Bears jumped out to the early lead with a three-run first inning, boosted by single runs in the subsequent three innings before exploding for seven runs in the fifth inning. Washington University tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning. Tyler Dearing took the loss in his final collegiate start at Wabash.
Wabash was held to five hits in the opening game Saturday. Kamden Earley finished with two hits in four at bats. Jumonville, Brayden Lentz, and Reece Bauer each collected a hit in the first game for the Little Giants. Dylan Scheid pitched five innings and scattered six hits and three walks with six strikeouts, but surrendered four runs to finish with the loss. Dearing pitched two innings and allowed only one hit and one run. Derek Haslett closed out the game allowing only one hit in one inning of work.
The Saturday doubleheader was the final non-conference game of the season for Wabash. The Little Giants will await the results of Sunday's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader between Denison and Wittenberg to see if it will be necessary to complete a suspended game between Wabash and Wittenberg later this week. The game would only be played if it would determine the West Division champion and the eventual representative to the upcoming NCAC Championship Series.
