WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (KSNB) - When Hastings Little League qualified for the Midwest Regional in Indianapolis, it was the first of many “firsts” the team would achieve on their journey to the Little League World Series.

The program had never even made it that far. Fast forward a week and Hastings was crowned champions of the Midwest and hitting the road to Williamsport.

“I’m not sure what we did to deserve this or how we got graced with this opportunity, but we’re sure taking advantage of it and just enjoying every minute of it,” Hastings coach Dustin Rader told Local4 on Monday.

In their opening game of the Little League World Series, the boys from Hastings kept their dream alive with a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey state champion, Toms River East Little League.

“I don’t even know how to put it into words right now,” Rader said. “It’s pretty cool. In the post-game presser they told me that was the first opening round game that the Midwest champion has won in 20 years.

“Stay humble and stay hungry at the same time and enjoy the ride. That’s what I keep telling the boys.”

Hastings Little League will play Hawaii on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT.
