Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse football program will wear a memorial patch during the 2021 season to honor the legacy of legendary running back Floyd Little.

Little, a three-time All American who was enshrined in both the NFL and College Football Hall of Fame, died on Jan. 1 at the age of 78 after being diagnosed with cancer.

The orange and white patch, located on the front of the jersey, features Little’s iconic No. 44 jersey number and his initials “FL” separated by a divider symbol.

Little is one of three legendary Orange running backs to wear the No. 44, joining Jim Brown and Ernie Davis. He finished his Syracuse career with 2,704 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns from 1964-66. He also led the nation in all-purpose yards (1,990) and punt return average (23.5) as a junior in 1965.

Little became the No. 6 overall NFL draft pick for the Denver Broncos in 1967, playing all nine seasons of his career with the team until 1975. He totaled more than 12,000 all-purpose yards, earned Pro Bowl honors five times and the nickname, “The Franchise,” because he kept the Broncos organization from relocating. In 1975, Little retired as the NFL’s 7th all-time leading rusher with 6,323 yards rushing and 54 touchdowns.

From 2011 until his retirement in 2016, Little served as special assistant to the former Syracuse athletic directors Daryl Gross and Mark Coyle for a short time, responsible for development and donor relations, recruitment and student-athlete and team development activities.

The Orange’s commemorative patches will make their debut Saturday in the season opener at Ohio (7 p.m. CBS Sports Network).
