Wabash erased a 14-point deficit in the final five minutes of regulation but lost in overtime 35-28 at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
Wabash (5-2, 4-2 NCAC) trailed 28-14 with 5:26 left to play in regulation and the Battling Bishops (6-2, 5-2 NCAC) set to kick a 33-yard field. David Marsh blocked the kick and Kamron Ferguson scooped up the loose ball to give the Little Giants the football at the 37-yard line.
Liam Thompson and the Wabash offense took over from there. The Little Giants marched 63 yards in four plays and scored on an 11-yard TD pass from Thompson to Jackson Clayborne to cut the lead to 28-20 after the missed extra point. Wabash held Ohio Wesleyan on three consecutive plays on the ensuing drive to force a punt.
The final fourth-quarter drive started on the Little Giants' 10-yard line. Wabash marched down the field on eight straight plays before Thompson his running back Donovan Snyder with an underhand toss for a seven-yard TD to cut the OWU lead to two points with 27 seconds remaining in regulation.
Wabash ran its own version of the "Philly Special" on the extra-point try. Heisman Skeens took a lateral and stopped along the right sideline to complete a pass to Thompson for the two-point try and draw Wabash even at 28-28.
The Little Giants won the coin toss in overtime and started on defense. Ohio Wesleyan got a 15-yard completion on third down and followed with a 10-yard touchdown run by TJ Weems. The extra-point kick provided a seven-point lead with Wabash ready to take over on offense.
Thompson immediately found Derek Allen on a 17-yard pass to move the Little Giants to the 8-yard line. Two plays later Thompson connected with Nick Hamman in the end zone but a holding penalty on the Wabash offense moved the football back to the 17. Thompson's third-down pass to Allen was knocked away at the last second by OWU defender Nick Cianciola. With Wabash needing to score for a chance to retie the game, Thompson dropped back but was sacked for the sixth time to end the game.
Wabash took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter on a 30-yard TD pass from Thompson to Cooper Sullivan. OWU regained the lead with a touchdown on the next offensive series to move back in front 10-7. The Battling Bishops took advantage of a late Wabash fumble to score just before halftime to extend the lead to 17-7. After a third-quarter field goal made it a 20-7 lead for OWU, Thompson capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard run to draw Wabash within six points. Ohio Wesleyan added a late third-quarter score to go in front 28-14 before the Little Giants produced the 14-point rally in the final five minutes of regulation.
Wabash finished with 393 yards of total offense but accumulated 375 of those yards in the passing game. One week after rushing for nearly 391 yards the Little Giants were held to 18 rushing yards on 26 carries. Thompson completed 26-of-46 passes for 375 yards and three TDs, but threw two interceptions and had one fumble to go with six sacks. Ohio Wesleyan came into the game with 20 turnovers and was ranked among the leaders in sacks with an average of 3-1/2 per game.
Allen caught seven passes for a career-high 138 yards. Sullivan finished with 10 receptions for 136 yards, his second consecutive week with more than 100 receiving yards and third 100-yard game of the season.
Ohio Wesleyan finished with a season-best 506 yards of offense. The Bishops ran for 206 yards and one touchdown and threw for 300 yards and three scores. Quarterback Zane Ries completed 25 of 41 passes and was sacked twice. Seth Buresh and David Marsh both recorded sacks for Wabash. Trey Dixon led OWU with 113 rushing yards on 28 carries. JT Dozier caught nine passes for 153 yards and one TD.
Casey Crozier made a team-high 10 solos tackles and finished with 17 total in the game. Marsh picked up 12 tackles, while Clayton McPeek recorded 11 total stops. Joe Rios added 10 tackles for Wabash.
The Little Giants complete the road portion of their season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Kenyon College before closing out the regular season with home games against Wittenberg and DePauw.
