Little River outlasts Canton-Galva in meeting of '19 and '20 champs - CatchItKansas

LITTLE RIVER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Little River Redskins improved to 5-0 with a 60 to 52 victory over the Canton-Galva Eagles.

Canton-Galva entered the game ranked first in Eight-man Division I and also District 4. Little River held the third-ranking.

The Eagles were the last team to hand Little River a loss during the regular-season meeting in 2020.

The Redskins won the toss and elected to receive the ball. On their very first play from scrimmage, Braxton Lafferty broke free from a 58-yard touchdown run.

They missed the two-point conversion to take a 6-0 lead.

Canton-Galva’s Garrett Maltbie evened the score on a 21-yard touchdown rush on the very next series. The Eagles missed the two-point conversion.

Little River responded with an 11 play drive capped with Rylen Konen scoring from the one-yard line. Braxton Lafferty scored the two-point conversion to make the score 14-6 Redskins.

Garrett Maltbie collected his first touchdown pass when he found Cason Mastre for a 24-yard score. Canton-Galva again failed to score the two-point conversion.

Braxton Lafferty scored his second touchdown on a 46-yard rush. Lafferty added the two-point conversion to go up 22-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Tyson Struber scored for the first time for the Eagles with a three-yard rush in the second quarter. Garrett Maltbie added the two-point conversion to narrow Little River’s lead to 22-20.

Braxton Lafferty got on the board for the third time in the evening with a 44-yard touchdown rush and then a three-yard run for the two-point conversion.

Tyson Struber capped the first-half scoring with a six-yard rush.

The teams went to the locker rooms for halftime with a 30-26 score.

Canton-Galva received the ball to start the second half. Cason Mastre gave the Eagles their first lead of the night on a 30-yard touchdown reception from Garrett Maltbie. They led 32-30

Maltbie grew the lead to 38-30 after hitting Tyson Struber for a 35-yard reception.

Little River responded to going down eight points with a Braxton Lafferty 45-yard touchdown run. Lafferty would add the two-point conversion to tie the game at 38 each to finish the third quarter.

Rylan Konen threw his first touchdown pass of the night when he found Andrew Smith open in the middle for a 58-yard score. Little River retook the lead 44-38.

Braxton Lafferty scored his fourth rushing touchdown after carrying the ball 50-yards. Andrew Smith pulled in a pass to add two more points and grew the Redskin lead to 52-38.

Rylan Konen scored Little River’s final touch down from eight yards out. Braxton Lafferty added the two-point conversion to give the Redskins 60 points.

Canton-Galva did not call it a night after surrendering 30 unanswered points.

Garrett Maltbie fought through a high ankle sprain and found Tyson Struber for an 18-yard touchdown. Struber also pulled in a pass for the two-point conversion.

Cason Mastre had the last score of the night on a seven-yard reception.

The final score was Little River 60 Canton-Galva 52.

Braxton Lafferty accumulated 318 yards of rushing with five scores.

Canton-Galva’s Garrett Maltbie threw five touchdown passes on 23 catches to 37 throws and 431 yards of passing.

Tyson Struber had 176 yards of receiving with two touchdowns. He also scored two on the ground on 23 yards over four carries.

Canon Galva could not find the score to retake the lead.
