Strong winds sweep LA, USC campus left with little damage - uscannenbergmedia.com

Heavy winds swept across Southern California, knocking down trees and creating dust storms on Monday night. Students at USC felt the gusts of wind on campus.

The need for a dust advisory arose for parts of Los Angeles as blowing dust and unhealthy air quality levels created safety concerns for residents. The South Coast Air Quality Management District advised people to stay indoors and make sure that doors and windows were closed if there was windblown dust in their area.

On USC’s campus, the only reported damage caused by the wind was the toppling of a light pole by the Little Galen restaurant near Heritage Hall, according to Assistant Chief David Carlisle from the Office of Community Safety and Accountability.

Off campus, a large tree branch fell in front of Troy Hall, a student apartment complex located near the Village, because of the winds and was cleaned up on Tuesday morning. Off campus streets like 29th Street saw lots of debris and fallen branches.

Leigh Hopper, a USC media relations specialist, said Facilities Management confirmed no trees went down on USC property, only debris.

Maria Barquera, a sophomore urban planning major, said she is used to high winds since she is from Georgia, a state that often experiences severe thunderstorms. Before moving to L.A., Barquera said she always associated the city with sunny and calm weather.

“It’s a little scary because I’m not from here,” Barquera said. “I didn’t know the winds would get this strong.”

On the other hand, Jamie Ma, a sophomore environmental studies major, said she is used to the intense Santa Ana winds. Despite her eyes getting puffy in the wind, Ma said she doesn’t mind being outdoors.

“I went out with my friend to Target and we were trudging back to our apartment with all our groceries,” Ma said. “There were leaves blowing in our faces.”

Kiran Bourget, a sophomore international relations major, said he never experienced winds like Monday night when he lived in Oregon. “I haven’t seen anything like that. It was crazy,” Bourget said.

The Santa Ana winds, which often occur in the fall, have a reputation for contributing to destructive wildfires in the region. Seven out of the 10 of the most destructive California wildfires happened in October and November.

Firefighters spent most of Tuesday combating the Alisal fire, which started Monday afternoon and, exacerbated by the winds, burned over 8,000 acres north of Santa Barbara. The blaze broke out near the Alisal Reservoir and heavy winds pushed it south toward the 101 Freeway, which later shutdown between Pacific Coast Highway and Winchester Canyon/Cathedral Oaks Road, according to fire officials.

Fire officials said the brush flame displaced thousands of residents and threatened approximately 100 homes.

L.A. wind levels are expected to decrease for the remainder of the week.
