This past Sunday, the Edwardsville 8U Little Tigers faced off against the Mascoutah Little Indians in the first round of the Tri-County playoffs.
The Little Tigers lost the coin toss and the Little Indians elected to defer.
The Little Tigers kicked to start the game. Mascoutah’s offense came onto the field and very quickly drove down the field against Edwardsville’s defense for a score.
The Little Tigers received the kickoff and their offense took to the field.
However, just a few plays later the Little Tigers turned the ball over and Mascoutah’s offense came back out.
The teams engaged in a defensive struggle for most of the 2nd quarter, but the Little Indians were able to punch the ball into the end zone for another score to go into half time with a 13-0 lead.
Edwardsville received the ball to start the 2nd half.
This time it was the Little Tigers turn to quickly push the ball down the field for a score, making the score Mascoutah 13, Edwardsville 6.
The Little Tigers’ defense forced the Little Indians to turn the ball over on downs.
The Edwardsville offensive again quickly moved down the field and scored again to tie the game 13-13.
However, the tie was short-lived as the Little Indians answered with a score of their own to take the lead 19-13.
The 4th quarter was again a defensive struggle, but with just 16 seconds left in the 4th quarter, Edwardsville scored to tie the game at 19-all.
Mascoutah attempted a couple of pass plays to break the tie before time expired, but the Edwardsville defense was not going to allow that. This game was now going into overtime.
Overtime was IHSA rules, with each team having an opportunity to score from the 10 yard line. Again, Mascoutah won the coin toss and deferred.
The Little Tigers offense came out and punched the ball over the goal line for a score in just two plays. Next it was the Little Indian’s offense turn.
The Edwardsville defense came out fired up and ready to shut Mascoutah down and did just that.
The Little Tigers defense pushed the Little Indians offense backward each of the next four plays, securing a 25-19 win and earning the right to play in the Tri-County 8U Gold Division Super Bowl.
The Edwardsville 8U Little Tigers will play the JJK 8U Flames on Sunday, November 7 at 12:30 p.m. in the championship game.
