This spring, Little League baseball will be coming to Montclair. For those of you who don’t know what Little League is, it is the largest organized youth sports league in the world. It began in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1939 and now is a worldwide organization. Montclair will join the organization and will have its own Little League, with teams competing here in town.

The new league will be replacing Montclair’s old recreation league for baseball. Morris Rockmaker, a Montclair baseball coach and dad who is president of the town Little League chapter, said that it will offer a chance for Montclair to be associated with the premier youth baseball league in America.

“It’s all the good stuff about rec, but with the known organization of Little League,” he said.

The season will run from mid-April to mid-June, with practices starting at the end of March (weather permitting). There will be two age divisions. The AAA level will be for grades three and four. The Majors level will be for grades five and six. There will be a regular season in which all the teams in each level will play games against each other, Montclair vs. Montclair.

At the end of the season, there will be an All Star team that is made up of the best players from every team. They will play other nearby towns’ All Star teams in a tournament. If it advances through all the rounds of the tournament, the All Star team of fifth and sixth graders will also be eligible for the Little League World Series in Williamsport, which is broadcast on ESPN.

Montclair is going to try to reach out to more kids in an effort to get them to give baseball a try, including ones who already play other sports besides baseball. Everyone is welcome to play! There will also be a lot of fundraisers and also beverage and snack sales at the games. The coaches for the Little League teams will all be volunteers.

For parents, you will need to know some things if you want to sign your kid up. If you don’t have any baseball gear, the league will help your kids find gloves, bats or any other equipment you need. Scholarships are also available. Registration began on Feb. 1, and can be done through the township’s Community Pass system, at register.communitypass.net.

If you want to find out more information, you can look under “youth programs” on the Recreation & Cultural Affairs section of the township’s website (montclairnjusa.org), call the recreation department at 973-509-4915, or email the League directly at MontclairLLbaseball@gmail.com.
