MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – For the third straight season, the Wesleyan women's tennis team can call themselves Little 3 Champions. In the midst of another incredible campaign, the No. 5 nationally ranked Cardinals continue their unbeaten run to start the 2022 dual match season with today's 7-2 victory over No. 18 Williams. Wesleyan, now 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in NESCAC play, have officially tied the program record for best start to a season.

After securing a tight 5-4 win over No. 9 Amherst last Sunday, the Cardinals were in prime position for a third straight Little 3 title heading into their match with the Ephs this afternoon. An incredible accomplishment, prior to 2019, the Cardinals had never beaten Williams, let alone win the Little 3.

As has been the case all season long, Wesleyan got out to an early lead thanks to success in doubles play as Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and Sasha Gaeth '23 teamed up at #1 to defeat Yuu Ishikawa and Erica Ekstrand pretty handily with a 8-3 triump. Nika Vesely '25 and Sophie Henderson '22 followed with another convincing victory at #2, defeating Jenny Tian and Zoe Bennett 8-4. Williams did manage a doubles point as Ananya Aggarwal and Katherine Orgielewicz took down Venia Yeung '22 and Katie Fleischman '23 at #3 by a score of 8-6.

Armed with the 2-1 advantage heading into singles, the Ephs managed a win at #1 to knot the team score at 2 apiece as Ekstrand defeated Ferrante 6-1, 6-1. But after that match, however, it was all Wesleyan as for the second straight day, the Cardinals rattled off five straight singles victories to stretch what was a 2-2 score into a 7-2 victory.

Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 set the tone with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 clean sweep of Maya Jamroz at #6 to put the Cardinals back out in front. Kristina Yu '22 followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #5 over Aggarwal to move Wesleyan just one point away from the match victory. That clinching point came soon after from Vesely at #2 as she took down Ishikawa 6-2, 6-2 to officially win the match and Little 3 title for the Cardinals.

Finishing strong in the remaining singles matches was Fleischman defeating Orgielewicz 6-3, 6-3 at #3 while Serim Jin '23 battled to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Tian at #4 as Wesleyan won this match in style, not dropping a single set and losing three games or less in eight of the 10 sets during the Cardinals' 5-0 singles run to close the match.

Wesleyan continues to impress in the 2022 season thus far, matching the 2021 Cardinal squad for the best start to a season in program history. Seven of Wesleyan's 10 wins have come against nationally ranked foes including the last three straight victories. Next up for the Cardinals is another Top 10 showdown as Wesleyan welcomes No. 10 Tufts on Saturday at 10 AM.
