Wabash had late opportunities to claim a victory in Wednesday's North Coast Athletic Conference baseball game versus Wittenberg. The Little Giants put the go-ahead run on base in the eighth inning and the potential winning run on in the ninth only to lose 5-2 to the visiting Tigers in 11 innings.

Wabash (12-6, 0-3 NCAC) got a one-out double from pinch-hitter Adam Oxley in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 2-2 tie with Wittenberg (13-5, 2-1 NCAC). But two consecutive flyouts brought the inning to an end with the score tied. The Little Giants threatened again in the bottom of the ninth inning when AJ Reid drew a one-out walk, then stole second base. A ground out moved Reid to third with two out, but the Tigers got one of 11 strikeouts by Wabash batters in the game to force extra innings.

The Little Giants produce another chance to win the game in the bottom of the tenth inning. Camden Scheidt opened the inning with a walk. Brayden Lentz followed with a single to right field to put runners at first and second. After another strikeout for the first out of the inning, Reece Bauer hit a ball toward the hole at short, but Wittenberg's Chase Whisner made the stop and threw to third to retire Scheidt for the first out of the inning. A ground ball to second ended the inning and another scoring threat for Wabash to send the game into the 11th inning.

Wittenberg took advantage of the extra opportunity by plating three runs with two outs off reliever Tavic Simmons in the top of the 11th. The Tigers produced four consecutive hits with two outs to claim the victory.

Wabash was unable to generate any offense throughout the entire game. The Little Giants collected only four hits. The Little Giants got one hit in the first inning when Kamden Earley singled through the right side. Earley scored when a fly ball by Reid to left-center field dropped on an error by the Tigers to give Wabash a 1-0 lead. Reid came home one batter later on a groundout by Liam Patton to give the Little Giants the 2-0 lead.

The Little Giants were held hitless for the next four innings before Austin Simmers singled with one out in the sixth inning. Oxley's double in the eighth and the single by Lentz in the 10th were the only other base hits for Wabash in the contest.

Wittenberg scored a run in the third inning off starter Grant Stratton before tying the game at 2-2 with another in the fifth inning. Stratton pitched 5-2/3 innings of seven-hit baseball. He allowed one earned run to go with one walk and two strikeouts. Sam Phillips pitched a scoreless 2-1/3 innings. He struck out two batters and walked one. Simmons worked 2-2/3 innings of three-hit ball, surrendering three earned runs to take his second loss of the season. Gavin Patrick retired the final Wittenberg batter of the game after giving up one hit.

The loss extends the Little Giants' home losing streak to four games, including three consecutive conference losses. Wabash is hitting just .227 over the four-game stretch with 30 strikeouts after batting .470 with 96 strikeouts in its first 14 games of the season.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed after the start of game one was delayed for three hours due to rain.

Wabash will travel to Gambier, Ohio, on Saturday for an NCAC doubleheader against Kenyon College.
