UNC Head Baseball Coach Scott Forbes has credited the beginning of the Diamond Heels' turnaround to a road series win at NC State, but it was at The Bosh where they cemented their tournament resume with a little magic.
Before their triumph in Raleigh, the Heels' needed 10th inning heroics from Tomas Frick to get past Charlotte at home. With the game tied at 3-3 with Reece Holbrook on first and one down, Frick smacked a double into the left-center field gap and Holbrook slid into home with the game-winning run.
It was Carolina's fourth walk-off win of the season, but not its last.
Two weeks later, the defining turning point of the season was struck with two outs in the bottom of ninth against Florida State.
Down to their final strike, the Tar Heels' Alberto Osuna barreled up a 2-2 slider and sent it soaring over the left field fence for a game-winning three-run home run and a 7-5 victory.
"I hit it and I was hoping it would get in the gap, I didn't realize how hard I hit it," Osuna said. "It was just a big blur once I hit it."
That swing led to a three-game sweep of the Seminoles and propelled the Heels on an eight-game winning streak which included four straight wins to claim the ACC Baseball Championship.
"Believing and having that Bosh Magic helps out a little bit," Forbes said.
UNC, 33-7 at home this season, needed a little more of that Bosh Magic to keep its season alive against Georgia in a Chapel Hill Regional elimination game.
Carolina led the Bulldogs 6-5 in the ninth but required the defensive play of the year from centerfielder Vance Honeycutt to save its season with a home run robbing catch.
The Tar Heels then advanced through the loser's bracket with back-to-back wins over VCU to reach the Super Regionals for the 10th time.
Thanks in small part to a little Bosh Magic.
