HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, MI – With a whole lot of hitting and a little bit of history, Greater Bay is on its way to the next step of the Little League tourney trail.
Greater Bay downed Bay City Southwest 11-2 in the District 14 title round for Little League baseball’s age 11-and-under division, claiming the first 11-under trophy in the two-year history of the combined Bay City Northwest and Essexville-Hampton all-star squad.
UPDATED district pairings, schedules, results
Greater Bay advances to sectional play, where it meets a to-be-determined district champion for a best-of-three series July 15-17. The winner of the sectional series advances to the state tournament at Mount Pleasant’s Union Township Little League.
Greater Bay already has a significant achievement under its belt, winning a district crown that is never easy to come by.
“Winning District 14 is always a big accomplishment,” Greater Bay coach Nick Southern said. “Our district is a tough one. The talent around the area is definitely top-notch. We knew coming into the district that we were going to face tough competition.”
Greater Bay prevailed, going undefeated in the double-elimination event hosted by Essexville-Hampton Little League.
The champs wasted little time taking control, plating eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brady Irrer and Brody Francis set the tone for Greater Bay, each knocking three hits. Grayson Ashlock added two hits while Ryder Southern, Easton Londry, Brayden Grzegorczyk and Kwess Mathews tallied one hit apiece.
Mathews delivered the biggest blow, a fourth-inning home run.
“Our players bought into the team mentality early on,” Nick Southern said. “And that’s a recipe for success.”
Ryder Southern notched the win, striking out nine over four innings. Carter Maze fanned four in the final two innings. The tandem combined to pitch a three-hitter in the victory.
Southwest got a pair of hits from Jace Melick and one hit from Henry LaLonde. Melick and Cole Goik scored the team’s runs.
Postseason success is nothing new to this Greater Bay bunch. With many of the players who form this year’s 11-and-under roster, Greater Bay captured the 10-and-under state championship in 2021.
The Major Baseball district tournament, for ages 12-and-under, begins Tuesday at Bay County Eastside’s St. Hyacinth Field.
