The Wabash tennis team scored 24 wins in the 35 matches played by the Little Giants in the 2022 Wabash Fall Invitational. The two-day, non-scoring event occurred Saturday and Sunday at the Collett Tennis Center.
Freshmen Adam Altobella, Bennett Strain, and Ethan Wallace completed the weekend with perfect 3-0 records in singles play against players from Illinois Wesleyan, Earlham, and Rose-Hulman. All three of Altobella's wins came in straight sets, with wins over Noah Radtke Kishimoto from Earlham (6-3, 6-2), Renato Prado from Earlham (6-4, 7-5), and Evan Turnbull from IWU (6-2, 6-1).
Strain scored a straight-sets win over Leonardo Leao from Earlham (6-0, 6-1) along with three-set victories against Rose-Hulman's Corey Pollard (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) and IWU's Zeke Cross (4-6, 6-2, 10-5). Wallace defeated Earlham's Robert Lemon (6-2, 6-2) and IWU's Sebastian Rasquin (6-3, 6-2) in straight sets, along with a three-set win over Ryan Burch from Rose-Hulman (6-3, 2-6, 10-5).
Jett Brownlee, Cole Langston, and Christan Zimmerman each picked up two wins in singles play. Brownlee went 2-0 for the weekend with victories over Lawson McCloskey from Rose-Hulman (6-4, 6-0) and Griffin Hammond from IWU (6-1, 6-4). Langston scored wins over Nathen Peck from Earlham (6-7 (8), 6-1, 10-4) and Josh Cortez from IWU (6-2, 6-0). Zimmerman scored victories against Sarthak Sharma from Earlham (6-3, 6-4) and Carter Burk from IWU (6-3, 6-3).
Augusto Ghidini and Blake Discher II added individual victories to the Little Giants' totals for the weekend. Ghidini earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Owen Reynolds from Rose-Hulman. Discher picked up a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win in his match against Earlham's Huynseong Ahn.
Altobella scored three more wins in doubles play. He combined with Bennett Strain for victories against Hammond and Cortez from IWU (8-6), as well as earning an 8-5 victory against Lawson McClosky and Renato Prodo from Rose-Hulman. Altobella joined Langston for an 8-2 victory against Leao and Lemon from Earlham.
Ghidini and Ethan Koeneman combined for a pair of victories in doubles play for Wabash. The duo earned an 8-1 win against Burk and Ryan McCoy from IWU. The two Little Giant players defeated Rhian Seneviratne and Grant Paradowski by a score of 8-6.
Brownlee and Discher claimed an 8-2 win against Radtke Kishimoto and Peck from Earlham in doubles action. Discher picked up a doubles victory with partner Eduardo Werneck. The duo defeated Ben Bigneri and Cross from IWU 8-3.
Wabash concludes the fall portion of the season next weekend at the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Tournament in St. Louis, Mo.
