The Lions head into Ivy League play at 2-0 after another road victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Lou Little Cup will remain in Manhattan after Columbia topped Georgetown, 42-6, Saturday afternoon. Four different players found the endzone in the contest as the Lions improved to 2-0 for the fourth time in the past five seasons dating back to 2017 with the victory.

The offense received career days from quarterback Joe Green and wide receiver Bryson Canty. Green threw for a career-high 263 yards and completed 23-of-33 passes with two touchdowns. Canty hauled in eight catches for 139 yards, including a highlight-reel 42-yard gain in the third quarter to set up a scoring drive. As a team, the Lions racked up 469 yards of total offense and had strong showings from Ty'son Edwards (19 carries, 80 yards) and Joey Giorgi (18 rushes, 73 yards) in the backfield. Columbia was also 14-of-18 on third down conversions.

Defensively, Columbia was dominant in stopping the run and held the Hoyas (1-3) to zero net rushing yards on 14 attempts. Bryan Bell-Anderson led the team in tackles for the second consecutive game with eight and had a pair of pass breakups. The Lions forced three turnovers on the day and, after not posting a pick-six in nearly ten years, returned an interception for a touchdown for the second straight weekend.

"I was pleased with the results today and how the team played," said Patricia & Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Al Bagnoli. "We're winning games, which makes us happy, but we also realize that we are capable of playing even better. We can improve in several areas, but the kids played great and we're happy to get out of here with a win.

"The balance we have right now on offense starts up front with the offensive line and tight ends, it allows us to run our offense through them. We know that we need to work on getting bigger chunk plays on offense, which we did today and I was pleased with how we spread the ball around. Holding Georgetown to zero yards rushing speaks volumes to our down seven and their ability to control the line of scrimmage."

The first quarter saw both teams commit turnovers and Georgetown missing a field goal. Aaron Brebnor prevented a Hoya score as time expired in the first quarter, intercepting a pass in the end zone to give the ball back to the Lions for the start of the second. Columbia marched into field goal range and got on the board with 10:00 in the second when Alex Felkins connected from 43 yards.

Ben Corniello came up with a critical sack on third down to push Georgetown out of scoring position and force a punt, giving the ball back to Columbia to set up a touchdown. Green connected with Wills Meyer for a 20-yard pickup to keep the drive alive on third down, and Joey Giorgi capped things off with a 13-yard scamper to extend the advantage to 10-0 with 59 seconds left in the half.

Two plays later, Scott Valentas swooped in to make a diving catch for the Lions' second interception to give Columbia a short field with 26 seconds remaining in the quarter. Marcus Libman came through with a 23-yard reception, allowing Felkins to cash in from 35 to put the Lions in front, 13-0, at the break.

Columbia took over to start the second half and held the ball for nearly half of the third quarter to make it a three-possession game. Libman was in the middle of things again, picking up a nice chunk of yardage after the catch for a 25-yard gain to put the ball in Georgetown territory. The Lions moved into the red zone, and Green found JJ Jenkins at the corner for his first career touchdown to make it 20 unanswered points for Columbia.

The Hoyas' Dorrian Moultriee III answered with a 70-yard return on the ensuing kickoff. Georgetown worked its way inside the 10, but a penalty and a trio of incompletions set up fourth-and-goal from the 18. However, Georgetown broke up the shutout bid when Joshua Stakely found Pierce Holley on a slant for the first touchdown allowed by the Lions this season. James Knox blocked the point-after try after blowing through the line to keep it 20-6 with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter.

Canty started and finished an eight-play, 85-yard scoring drive with his acrobatic catch and then scored from 18-yards out on a post route. After holding Georgetown on its next turn on offense, Malcolm Terry II broke off a 40-yard touchdown, and linebacker Rocco Milia put the exclamation point on the win, picking off a pass for a 93-yard score. The Lions then converted on a two-point conversion to cap the scoring.

Milia's interception was the longest returned for a touchdown in program history, breaking the previous mark of 87 set by Ross Morand against Harvard in 2011.

"Our kids are looking forward to finally playing a home game," added Bagnoli. "Its been a long preseason, since our kids reported in mid-august and our first home game isn't until October. But the team will be excited and ready to open home."

The Lions will make their home debut against Princeton in the Ivy League opener for both squads Saturday, October 1 at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting www.gocolumbialions.com/tickets or calling 888-LIONS-11.
