Nash-Miller credits the work of Calta and both Maryland and Penn State’s coaching staffs for the game’s creation.
“Keith had the idea, we had the facility and the teams are making it happen,” Nash-Miller said. “It was just a really neat collective effort and it’s great to see it all come together. The partnership between Keith and his crew, Mark and (Penn State coach) Clarissa (Crowell), and us at Little League has been so unique and special.”
Calta specifically cites the backing of Montgomery in the creation of the event—backing that has been there since Montgomery was first hired.
“Mark has been a major supporter in this process,” Calta said. “He’s really embraced it, he’s helped drive it and he’s had a lot of ideas of his own. We both have the same thinking that this isn’t just something that can happen this year for his girls, it’s something that can generate something for the whole environment of softball.”
For Montgomery and his program, the chance to take part in such a historic event was a no-brainer.
“Our coaches and players have grown up watching games being played on Lamade Field,” Montgomery said. “It is such a special venue with amazing historical significance. The chance to play here is definitely a ‘bucket list’ type of opportunity and one I know all of us involved with the game are looking forward to.”
“The hope is that this game, on this stage, will inspire young girls just beginning their experiences with softball to envision playing at the highest level, securing their own scholarship and becoming the next great college or olympic softball player,” he added. "And we hope that those experiences will help guide young women into becoming tomorrow's leaders.”
