Walking tour teaches history of Burlington’s Little Jerusalem - WCAX

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - People took to the streets on Sunday to learn about a historic Burlington immigrant neighborhood called Little Jerusalem.

“We did this tour as part of an educational increase in our mission to bring people knowledge about the Jewish community and its history... to actually help people find their way, walk the paths, walk the streets and see what was where in order to realize what we have built upon where we are today,” archivist Aaron Goldberg said.

Little Jerusalem is the historic Jewish quarter in Burlington. The neighborhood was located in the city’s Old North End and was particularly vibrant between the 1880s and early 1900s.

“A large group of Jewish immigrants came after suffering for more than 100 years. They established the core pieces of a community. So, you had synagogues, Hebrew school, we’re sitting in front of the Hebrew school that is built by the three synagogues in 1910,” Goldberg said.

On the tour, people got to learn the widely unknown history of buildings around town with Jewish cultural and religious significance.

“The north boundary is First Street to south boundary is in North Street. And the east boundary is Hyde Street, but by then we have over 1,400 residents,” Goldberg said.

Although Little Jerusalem had largely faded as a distinct community by the time of the Second World War, archivists say it’s important to remember its impact and legacy.

“It’s important as we walk forward that we need to not just remember our past, we need to walk with it right next to us,” Goldberg said.

They say they hope the tour will inspire people in Burlington to get involved with the community and appreciate it.

“I don’t want people to walk these streets with me and forget about them. When they’re walking by here in the future or driving by their future, I want them to think about what was here before and I want them to embrace what was here before them, as I think that we make our best plans in the future when we’re embracing our past,” Goldberg said.
