Little Giants Claim Eight Top-Six Finishes At Indiana Little State - Wabash College

Wabash earned eight top-six finishes, including two individual titles, at Saturday's Indiana Little State Tournament at Manchester University.

James Day and Jack Heldt finished undefeated in the tournament to capture first-place championships. Day won three matches to capture the 125-pound weight class title. Heldt recorded pins in all four heavyweight matches to win the bracket championship.

Day opened the tournament with a pin in 35 seconds against Zimni Malomboza from Indiana Tech, followed by a 6-2 decision against Nathan Smith in the semifinals. Day won the 125-pound title with a 6-5 victory against Aidan Sprague from the University of Indianapolis. 

Heldt started his day with a pin of Marques Lewis from Marian in 1:17. Heldt needed only 34 seconds to earn his second win with a pin of Ryan Latimore from Indiana Tech. Heldt advanced to the championship finals with a pin at 1:35 of West Liberty's Jamie Kilmer. A pin at the 5:52 mark of the final bout against Cameron Mayes-Butler from Indiana Tech gave Heldt the weight class title.

Grant Johnson placed fourth at heavyweight after scoring three wins in the bracket. He opened with an 8-1 decision over Bryce Crump from the University of Indianapolis. Johnson moved on to the championship semifinals with a 16-0 tech fall of Joseph Chacon from Indiana Tech. Johnson rebounded from a loss in the semis to a 13-11 victory in the consolation semifinals against Austin Lane from Marian University before a medical forfeit in the finals put Johnson in fourth place.

Tyson Nisley battled to a second-place finish at 157 pounds. He started with a pin at 1:41 of Keagen Mabie from the host Manchester squad. Nisley scored an 8-3 win over Noah Salary from the University of Indianapolis in the quarterfinals, then moved into the finals with a 6-5 victory against Bailey Moore from Marian. Nisley's day ended with a medical forfeit for the second-place finish in the finals.

Ray Arebalo earned a second-place finish at 174 pounds with three wins in the weight class. He started the day with a 17-0 tech fall victory against Treyton Mucker from the University of Indianapolis. Arebalo won his next match by pin at the 2:03 mark of his bout versus James Bettcher from Manchester. Arebalo moved into the championship finals with a 15-0 tech fall win versus Jahmon Spller from Thomas More before taking his only loss in the championship bout to place second.

Jesse Herrera added a third-place finish in the 165-pound weight class. He pinned Drake Egan from Indiana Tech at 3:28 in the first match of the day. Herrera fell to the consolation bracket in the second round before earning an 18-2 tech fall victory against Carlos Monroy Santos. Herrara scored his last win on the mat with a 7-6 win against Marian's Jeff Dunasky before accepting two medical forfeits in the final two matches for the third-place finish in the bracket.

Ayden Lute won six matches at 157 pounds to finish third overall in the bracket. He won his first match of the day with an 8-2 victory over Byan Richardson from Marian University. Lutes followed with a 4-2 win against Kailan Keith from Thomas More before taking a loss in the quarterfinal round. Lute rallied for four consecutive wins in the following rounds, capped with a 5-4 win against Toby Abbott from West Liberty.

Arlie Benson finished in sixth place at 133 pounds. Benson finished 3-3 for the tournament with an 18-2 tech fall over Maleec Griffin from Marian University in the opening round. Benson also earned two major decisions on the way to his sixth-place finish.
