China removes defense minister with little explanation - New York Daily News

Chinese Defense Minister Gen. Li Shangfu is the country’s second senior official to vanish from public view this year as state media reported his ousting on Tuesday.

Li has not been seen in public for almost two months, and no details have been offered as to why he was removed. Back in July, former Foreign Minister Qin Gang was removed from office in similar fashion, with no explanation.

In an unusual turn, Both Li and Qin were also stripped of their state councilor titles on Tuesday, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

The moves come as Beijing is dealing with economic setbacks and increased tensions with the U.S. over technology, trade and Taiwan.

So far, it’s unclear whether the turnover among top officials is a result of a policy shift or a revamped crackdown on corruption and disloyalty in President Xi Jinping’s administration.

Xi, the ruling leader of China’s Communist Party, has a reputation for demanding unwavering loyalty and has continually condemned corruption in public and private settings.

Occasionally, his behavior has been seen as a way to eliminate political rivals and strengthen his own political position.

CCTV reported Tuesday that Li and Qin had been removed from the State Council, China’s Cabinet and the center of government power, which assures that their political careers are finished.

It’s unclear whether the men will face prosecution or legal sanctions. Li is currently under U.S. sanctions related to his leadership during weapon purchases from Russia.
