A portion of Little Conestoga Creek was discovered to be an odd green shade Saturday morning, but officials determined the discoloration was caused by food-grade dye.
Emergency crews including the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protections responded to Fieldgate Drive and Hershey Mill Road in West Hempfield Township just after 8 a.m. for a report that the creek water was green.
HazMat Environmental Fire Rescue Company tested the water and said there's no reason for concern and no further action is required.
"There is no concern for impact to the public or any drinking water" HazMat said on Facebook Saturday. "As well, there is no impact to wildlife that has been noted."
Peter Taraborelli, public information officer with Mountville Fire Company, said the odd coloring of the creek is attributable to food-grade dye. It's unknown how long the discoloration will last.
"While it looks alarming, it is not," Taraborelli said, adding there isn't a smell or different taste to the water.
