MASSENA, New York (WWNY) - A new concession stand taking shape at Leo Lashomb Field in Massena. It’s being rebuilt after an August fire destroyed the stand and sporting equipment.
League President Leon Shorette set a fundraising goal of $100,000 and says the community has knocked it out of the park.
“As of now we’ve raised about $80,000 and then Dick’s Sporting Goods - they’re one of our sponsors this year - they are mailing us a check for $15,000,” said Shorette.
Construction for the new concession stand started about two weeks ago. Significant progress has been made thanks to donations and volunteers who are helping to build the new stand.
“For everybody here, it’s really something we enjoy doing. We like doing construction. Most of us kind of dabble and play with this on the side. To be able to give back to the community is just an extra feather in your cap,” said volunteer Justin Niles.
Niles says he and other workers are hoping to finish the roof on the new stand by the end of this week so they can then focus their time to work on the interior and be ready for next spring’s season.
Ryan Prairie, who’s a father of a member of the Little League team, says not only is this rebuilding the concession stand it’s also rebuilding community spirit.
“This is a small community. We look out for each other. We look out for our neighbors. We look out for our children. This town has always responded well - not just this town, but surrounding towns as well - have always responded to any issues they’ve had to come together and help kids, help people in need, and get things done that need to get done,” he said.
