Jonah Hauer-King Got Too Muscly for 'The Little Mermaid' - Vulture

Turns out Prince Eric is a bit of an overachiever. Jonah Hauer-King’s personal trainer for the live-action Little Mermaid, Sana Shirvani, told Insider that the actor actually gained too much muscle while preparing for his role. Shirvani said she put Hauer-King on a standard bodybuilding program before production started. According to Shirvani, he was relatively new to gym training at the time, and also had to rebuild strength in his knee due to a prior ACL surgery. “He was so into the training,” she said. “He really enjoyed the strength training, the progressive overload, seeing the developments.” When the pandemic shut filming down for eight months, Hauer-King continued working out through virtual sessions — so enthusiastically, in fact, that he got too ripped. “I remember the director coming up to me and saying, ‘We are not after the Incredible Hulk, we want a strong sailor boy,’” Shirvani recalled. Ultimately, Prince Eric ended up reducing both his training and his food intake to become a less muscular part of our world.

David Faustino says Christina Applegate is working on building up her strength amid her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.

The Married with Children alum, 49, chatted with PEOPLE at the 30th annual Race to Erase MS gala on Saturday, where he offered an explanation as to why his former costar was not in attendance at the event.

“She's not ready to be here tonight,” Faustino said. “I'm just here to offer her as much support and love for her as I can.”

“I think she just wants to get a little stronger,” he added. “I'm thinking she'll be here next year. She was on the fence, but she just said, ‘I'm just not feeling up to it right now.’ ”

MS is a disease that affects the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord — and can cause problems with muscle control and strength, vision, balance, feeling and thinking. Symptoms include numbness, tremor or lack of coordination.

It differs in each case, with some people going through life with only minor problems, while others becoming seriously disabled.

Applegate, 51, was diagnosed with the neurological disease in August 2021 while filming the third and final season of her Netflix series Dead to Me.

When asked how he found out about Applegate’s diagnosis, Faustion told PEOPLE, “She reached out to all of us,” referring to the cast of Married with Children, which ran from 1987 to 1997.

Though the actress suggested that a chapter in her decades-long acting career has come to an end, Faustino told PEOPLE that “she can do the animated version” of a Married with Children reboot.

When asked if the Bad Moms star is interested in starring in the planned series, Faustino responded, “Oh, yeah. The whole cast [has talked about it]." He added that they “love to text each other.”

“We already are all signed on. It's just a matter of the studio making the deal,” the star told PEOPLE.

Beyoncé Wore a Barely-There Little Black Dress on the Renaissance World Tour - Harper's BAZAAR

little.indah.link

Beyoncé has introduced yet another fabulous look to her rotation of onstage costumes for the Renaissance World Tour.

Last night on Instagram, the mogul shared photos of her latest tour look, which put a futuristic spin on the little black dress. She wore a body-hugging black leather minidress with a zipper down the center, an asymmetrical hemline, and a sculptural off-the-shoulder detail that extended into coiled mesh sleeves. She wore the look with sheer black tights and glossy black pumps.

Further upping the ante, the Grammy-winning singer opted for sparkling silver beaded jewelry, including a choker necklace and abstract chandelier earrings.

Fans immediately sounded off their approval in the comments.

“It should cost a billion to look this good! 💰💰,” one wrote, quoting her lyrics from “Pure/Honey.”

“FACE CARD NEVER DECLINES MY GOD 😍😍.” another fan added.

On the tour thus far, the multi-hyphenate has also worn the likes of Alexander McQueen, Loewe, Coperni, David Koma, and Courrèges.

Beyoncé released her seventh studio album, Renaissance, last July. She previously teased the record in an interview for Harper’s BAZAAR’s September 2021 cover story.

“With all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again. I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible,” she said. “I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare. One chorus can have up to 200 stacked harmonies. Still, there’s nothing like the amount of love, passion, and healing that I feel in the recording studio. After 31 years, it feels just as exciting as it did when I was nine years old. Yes, the music is coming!”

After 'Little Mermaid' remake endures harsh reviews, IMDb steps in, alters review system for movie - Fox News

little.indah.link

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) activated an "alternate weighting calculation" in order to compensate for alleged "unusual activity" among audiences reviewing the new "Little Mermaid" remake.

"The Little Mermaid" is one of many live-action remakes of iconic, animated Disney films from the late 1980s to the 1990s.

The new film has been criticized from a variety of perspectives, ranging from the racial recasting of what was originally a White character to criticism of Asian actress Awkwafina’s rap song "The Scuttlebutt" and Wesley Morris lamenting in The New York Times that the children’s film lacked "kink."

The movie's mixed reflection appears to have extended to its reviews, to the point IMDb has stepped in.

DISNEY'S LIVE ACTION REMAKE OF 'THE LITTLE MERMAID' REWRITES SONGS LIKE 'KISS THE GIRL' TO TEACH CONSENT

The live-action "Little Mermaid" adaptation’s page on IMDb has a warning label declaring, "Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied."

IMDb described these "weighted average ratings" as a process where "we accept and consider all votes received by users, not all votes have the same impact (or ‘weight’) on the final rating. When unusual voting activity is detected, an alternate weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system."

The process does not appear to be transparent, however. The site explained: "To ensure that our rating mechanism remains effective, we do not disclose the exact method used to generate the rating."

The weighted average rating system makes a massive difference, raising a 4.7/10 original "unweighted" average up to 7/10.

TOMI LAHREN PUTS NY TIMES ON NOTICE FOR LAMENTING ‘LITTLE MERMAID’ LACKED ‘KINK’: ‘WE ARE DONE PLAYING’

One notable factor is that reviewers across multiple countries and continents panned the film, possibly implying that this was not entirely caused by one centralized campaign. Thousands of collective users from the U.K., Brazil, Canada and Mexico have given the 1/10 score.

Christian Toto, host of the "Hollywood in Toto" podcast, told Fox News Digital that ratings websites appear to protect films with diverse casts or narrative amenable to the political left.

"We've seen major movie sites like IMDb.com and Rotten Tomatoes routinely tweak its system to combat so-called ‘review bombing.’ The films in question are often those embraced by the left or stories that feature ‘diverse’ casts or storylines. Think Amazon's ‘Rings of Power’ series," he wrote. "Why are they singled out for protection?"

He added that while there may indeed be some genuine "movie trolls" condemning the film, this incident highlights how only some films are protected by these institutions.

"Yes, some movie trolls could be trying to sink a film for any number of reasons, but the same holds true for faith-based films or that rare conservative product," he wrote. "Does IMDb rush to protect those titles from possible review bombing? If not ... why not? Why only select titles? Did those sites suss out ‘unusual activity’ around titles like ‘What Is a Woman?’"

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

He proposed one solution, however.

"What's needed here is transparency. What triggers ‘unusual activity'?" he asked. "What does that mean, exactly? What if that activity is the honest feedback on a given film? Then what? If consumers can't trust these sites to accurately capture audience reactions, then what's the point?"

Fox News Digital reached out to IMDb.com for comment. This article will be updated with any response.

How Old Is Ariel in the New 'The Little Mermaid'? Answered - The Mary Sue

little.indah.link
Halle Bailey in the little mermaid

If you’ve already had a chance to see the new live-action remake of Disney’s beloved classic The Little Mermaid—which many are calling one of Disney’s best live-action remakes yet—you’ll have noticed that director Rob Marshall made a series of changes to the story and lore that we all know from the 1989 animated movie.

Some of these changes include the different appearances and roles that Ariel’s six older sisters have within their father King Triton’s underwater kingdom, for example; or that Ariel’s pact with Ursula isn’t finalized by her signing a contract, but instead by ripping one single bloody scale from her tail. And speaking of Ursula, the way she deals with those who couldn’t uphold their end of the bargain with the sea witch is way more brutal than it was in the animated version—which already gave me nightmares as a child.

Another change that might not be immediately as noticeable as others is also one that actually really impacts our main characters: their age. Both Ariel and Eric’s ages were pretty well-defined in the original animated version of The Little Mermaid, and while it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, this remake does make a slight tweak.

So how old is Halle Bailey’s Ariel?

Ariel is famously 16 years old in the animated version of The Little Mermaid, a year older than the titular mermaid in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, the literary fairytale on which both Disney versions are based.

In Andersen’s story, the little mermaid is 15 years old—the age at which members of the underwater kingdom are permitted to go to the surface of the sea. It’s during her first time above water that the little mermaid sees the human prince and falls in love with him. It’s actually a detail that Marshall’s The Little Mermaid upholds, since “his” Ariel has clearly never been to the surface before.

The choice to make Ariel a 16-year-old in the animated version is clearly a winner. Impulsive and headstrong, she’s the poster child of teenage experience, misunderstood by her father and capable of seeing the world differently than he does.

Ariel looking at a book in the animated 'The Little Mermaid'
“I’m 16 years old! I’m not a child anymore!” (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

Obviously, even though Halle Bailey herself is in her early 20s, her version of Ariel couldn’t be much older than her animated counterpart. In fact, all of Sebastian’s original lines about how teenagers need to be controlled at all times have been kept for Daveed Diggs’ version of King Triton’s crustacean majordomo—leading us to believe that Ariel is still a teenager in the live-action version.

A production note by Disney, reported by Yahoo!, describes Ariel as a “spirited 18-year-old.” It actually makes perfect sense: 18 brings her closer to Bailey’s actual age, keeps that youthful rebellion believable, and also relatively lessens the potential “ick” of her very quick marriage to Eric.

Image of Halle Bailey as Ariel in a scene from 2023's 'The Little Mermaid.' Ariel is a Black mermaid with red hair wearing a purple seashell bra and has a green fish tail. She is smiling with one arm in the air as she leans on some coral where a red crab, Sebastian, is standing. They are "Under the Sea."
Halle Bailey’s Ariel is already of age in the remake of The Little Mermaid (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

And how old is Prince Eric?

Speaking of Eric, his age has also been raised slightly for the live-action remake. In the original animated movie, we know that he’s celebrating his 18th birthday the night he falls into the sea and gets rescued by Ariel—the statue in his likeness commissioned by Grimsby is specifically meant to mark such an important age. As we all know, Eric couldn’t be more delighted.

The context in this new The Little Mermaid is almost the same: Eric has been at sea for weeks, gathering goods and curiosities from the waters that surround his island, but he’s still celebrating his birthday the night a terrible storm hits his ship and he “meets” Ariel. The difference here is that the birthday in question is the prince’s 21st rather than his 18th, as Grimsby notes while encouraging Eric to act more regally and take his place in running the affairs of his mother’s domain.

Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King as Ariel and Eric during the "Kiss the Girl" scene in the 2023 live-action remake of The Little Mermaid
The two main characters are slightly older in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid than their animated versions (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

This is a choice that once again brings the character slightly closer to the age of the actor who portrays him, Jonah Hauer-King, who is himself in his late 20s—and also helps in making the wedding that closes the story a bit more acceptable to modern audiences.
