Fabulous fall is finally here.  I can’t stand the heat; I can’’t stand the cold.  This weather is Goldilocks right for me.  The color of fall leaves makes me feel like I live in a fairytale book. 

Even without a fairy godmother I can finish many chores because of the cool mornings.  Getting a good night’s sleep really helps with the fresh air from an open  window.  I even got married in the fall. Fall spices like cinnamon and nutmeg and ginger enhance all of my baking.  (My husband just read this over my shoulder and wanted to know when will the baking start?)  He has a one-track mind. 

Growing up, my grandparents lived across the street from the football field so that meant homecoming was a big deal complete with food, sparklers and a bonfire.  Raking the leaves and jumping in them was half the fun before we even lit the fire. All the cousins were there.  None of us had to pay a dime to see the game from grandpa’s house.  It was almost better than Halloween!

My sister Barb loved fall because of the apples which she and her friend (you know who you are, Pat Hanson)  stole from the neighbors. They liked sour green apples with salt on them.  I bet their taste buds have changed over time.  My mouth puckers just from typing (green apples with salt on them).

There are so many varieties of apples that every taste bud can be satisfied.  My favorite is honeycrisp which was created right in Minnesota in 1991.  I prefer macintosh for baking.  Up until 2017 red delicious was the most popular variety in the United States.  Gala apples beat it  in 2018.  Some like apples red. Some like apples pink.  Some like apples green like granny smith.  Some like them hard.  Some like them soft.  Some like them sweet.  Some like them sour.  Some even  like them with salt on them.  Most everybody likes them in pie!  Applesauce and apple butter are also popular. Hard apples like granny smith have less sugar and so last longer.  When picking apples, twist them gently so the stem stays on.  This also helps them last longer.

An alternative to apple pie is this honey and apple cake.

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Prolonged disruption to oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and multiplying signs of a worldwide energy shortage have not been enough to encourage significant new petroleum buying from portfolio investors.

Hedge funds and other money managers purchased the equivalent of just 12 million barrels in the six most important petroleum futures and options contracts in the week to Sept. 21, according to exchange and regulatory data.

Funds have purchased a total of 129 million barrels in the last four weeks, offsetting about half the 268 million barrels they sold over the previous ten weeks amid concerns about a rising number of coronavirus cases.

But purchases in the most recent week were the lowest so far, suggesting earlier bullish momentum was fading, right before prices climbed to their highest level for almost three years.

In the most recent week, funds were buyers of Brent (+21 million barrels) and U.S. heating oil (+8 million) but small sellers of NYMEX and ICE WTI (-11 million), U.S. gasoline (-1 million) and European gas oil (-5 million).

The combined position across all six contracts rose to 806 million barrels (73rd percentile for all weeks since 2013) up from a recent low of 677 million (59th percentile) on Aug. 24.

The ratio of bullish long positions to bearish short ones climbed to 5.85:1 (79th percentile) up from 4.25:1 (57th percentile) in late August, implying the hedge fund community is broadly bullish about the outlook for oil prices.

In real terms, front-month Brent futures prices are at their highest level since October 2018 and well above their long-term average, in the 71st percentile for all months since 1990.

However, positions are not especially stretched at this point; there is scope for more buying and only a moderate risk of an abrupt reversal in the price trend based on positioning alone.

“Jagged Little Pill” barrels into tonight’s Tony Awards with 15 nominations, more than any other show — but also with its producers confronting two controversies that have prompted scrutiny and an apology.

The show, a musical featuring Alanis Morissette songs and a script that explores a host of social issues, is one of three contenders for best musical, and is a leading contender in the best featured actress and best book categories. It plans to resume performances on Broadway next month.

But in the run-up to the Tonys the show’s producers have found themselves responding to criticism over how depictions of a character’s gender identity evolved as the show developed, and over the accusation by a former member of the cast who said they were asked to delay a surgical procedure. (The Tony voting period ended in March, before that accusation became public.)

On Saturday, the show’s lead producers, Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price, said that they had hired an employment lawyer to look into an accusation from the former cast member, Nora Schell, who uses the pronouns they and them, and who said the production had asked them to delay a procedure to remove vaginal cysts. The union representing stage performers, Actors’ Equity, also said it would investigate; Schell said a union vice president was among those who mishandled the medical concerns.

The statement from the producers came a little more than a week after the musical had issued an apology for its response to concerns about the gender identity of one of the show’s main characters, Jo, who is played by Lauren Patten, a nominee for best featured actress in a musical.

During the show’s pre-Broadway run, some people saw Jo as a rare example of nonbinary representation in a major musical; when the show then transferred to Broadway, some of those fans were disappointed with how the role had evolved.

“In Jo, we set out to portray a character on a gender expansive journey without a known outcome,” the lead producers said. “Throughout the creative process, as the character evolved and changed, between Boston and Broadway, we made mistakes in how we handled this evolution. In a process designed to clarify and streamline, many of the lines that signaled Jo as gender nonconforming, and with them, something vital and integral, got removed from Jo’s character journey.”

The producers said they had “hired a new dramaturgical team (which includes nonbinary, transgender and BIPOC representation), to revisit and deepen the script.”

Schell, who was a member of the ensemble when the musical opened in late 2019, voiced their concerns about backstage treatment on Twitter.

“During previews for the Broadway run of JAGGED LITTLE PILL I was intimidated, coerced and forced by multiple higher ups to put off CRITICAL AND NECESSARY surgery to remove growths from my vagina that were making me anemic,” Schell wrote.

The producers responded with their own statement, declaring themselves “deeply troubled” by the claims and pledging to “take this matter very seriously.”

“Broadway shows are by their very nature collaborative human efforts, so there is nothing more important to us than our people,” they said. “We are committed to continuing to nurture a work environment where everyone feels valued and respected.”

On Saturday, one of the show’s Tony-nominated stars, Celia Rose Gooding, said on Twitter that she was concerned by the allegations. Responding to Schell’s tweet, she wrote, “this is unacceptable. nobody should have to put off necessary medical treatment for a show, ever.”

And, in a more general tweet bidding farewell to the show, which she is leaving for a role in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” she wrote that she “cannot ignore the harm Jagged has done to the trans and nonbinary community.”

KOHLER, Wisconsin, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy could not stop the tears after finally delivering a point for Europe in a futile quest to prevent the United States reclaiming the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman, a four-time major champion and former world number one, was one of the big weapons in Europe captain Padraig Harrington's arsenal but failed to fire.

He suffered heavy defeats in Friday's foursomes and fourballs matches and went down again in Saturday's fourballs having been left out of a Ryder Cup session for the first time in his career for the morning foursomes.

McIlroy, who also lost three of his five matches in 2018 when Europe cruised to victory, found some form to beat Xander Schauffele 3&2 in Sunday's first singles but with the United States 11-5 ahead overnight and needing only 3.5 points to snatch back the trophy it was a hollow point.

"I've been extremely disappointed that I haven't contributed more for the team. I'm glad I got a point on the board today for them. It's been a tough week," a choked McIlroy told reporters.

"And the more and more I play in this event, I realise that it's the best event in golf, bar none. I love being a part of it. Can't wait to be a part of many more."

Playing in his sixth Ryder Cup, McIlroy knows the joy of winning with his team mates. But the pain of defeat was clear to see as McIlroy spoke of his love for the biennial competition.

"I don't think there's any greater privilege to be a part of one of these teams, European or American. It's an absolute privilege. I've gotten to do this six times," he said.

"I have never really cried or got emotional over what I've done as an individual. I couldn't give a shit. But this team, and what it feels like to be a part of, to see Sergio (Garcia) break records, to see Jon Rahm come into his own this week, to see one of my best friends, Shane Lowry, make his debut.

"It's phenomenal and I'm so happy to be a part of it. I'm disappointed that I didn't contribute more. Glad I got a point on the board for Europe, disappointed I didn't do it sooner."

With Europe suffering a resounding defeat against a high-quality U.S. team, McIlroy said he was already looking forward to trying to win back the trophy in Rome in 2023.

"The American team have been total class in terms of how they played. They have been dominant. They have been really, really good and we haven't been able to put up as much of a fight as we want," he said.

"But this will just fill the fire even more for us in two years' time in Rome."

The Portland Trail Blazers are less than two weeks away from the start of training camp and the roster is close to being set, and Nassir Little expects to make a definite contribution this year coming off of the bench. Little is going into his 3rd year in the NBA, all of which he has played with the Trail Blazers.

Jason Quick of the Athletic explored Little’s offseason and looked ahead to his upcoming season with the team. The young player shows promise, and he’s got the franchise talking.

As I’ve asked this month about the offseason progress and work ethic of players, there was no hemming and hawing. This was an offseason when a player clearly separated himself. The player? Nassir Little. Phrases like “he’s made an impression” and “we are intrigued” and “he can contribute in a way that is unique” were used in describing the 6-foot-6 wing, who is entering his third season.

Little was set to compete with the summer Blazers at Summer League in Las Vegas this year, but was taken off the roster shortly prior to the tournament. While fans initially seemed to panic and wonder what that meant for his future with the team, it looks as though it was actually a vote of confidence in Little. Quick states in the piece that during Summer League practices, Little and new coach Chauncey Billups developed a connection.

“We are pretty close already,” Little said. “I think we connect pretty well, and work well together. We’ve had a really open line of communication, which I think is good for a young player like myself. He’s been pretty straightforward in what he expects from me, and what my role will be, as long as I continue to do what I’m doing. That’s kind of all I ever wanted. All I could ask for. So I appreciate that.”

“He told me he expects me to be one of the first guys off the bench,” Little said. “To just be a 3-and-D guy … hit shots, put pressure on the rim.”

While there haven’t been major changes made to the roster this season, small tweaks could make a difference, especially with a new coaching staff. Earlier this summer, Jusuf Nurkic stated that he was looking forward to working with the new head coach, and Billups seemingly reciprocated that same feeling. Little clearly isn’t the first player from the team to express his excitement and connection with Billups, but in his case, it could make all the difference.

“To me, it’s just a clean slate,” Little said. “There’s no preconceived notions on who is going to get what. Everything is being looked at with a clear-eyed view. If I showcase that I am deserving, then that’s what it is. There’s no prior relationships, or any promises that were given. So from this point, everything is genuinely earned. For me, that’s all I’ve ever wanted, ever since I left high school – just a fair chance.

“I knew once they announced there was going to be a staff change, it was my opportunity to have a clean slate and show, ok, this guy can play,” Little said. “So that’s why I’m excited for it and eager to see what happens.”

AURORA | A man shot in the leg who found his own way to a local hospital at about 10 p.m. Saturday offered no information to police about how he was injured, police said.

Police were called to the hospital after the man arrived for treatment, but when investigators arrived, they learned little about the incident.

“He will only say that it happened on Havana,” police said in a tweet. “No suspect or other information is available.”
