BUCKLEY — Manistee Catholic Central played Buckley tough for three straight sets, but unfortunately for the Sabers, all three sets ended in defeat on Oct. 21.
The Bears opened play with a 25-19 win, however, the Sabers made it much closer the next two sets.
Manistee Catholic Central held leads of at least three points in each of the final two sets as well as late leads of 22-21, but Buckley finished strong in both to win 25-22 each time to clinch the win.
Sabers coach Kaytlin Heck came away pleased with the effort and said her team just needs to work on its execution.
“Their effort was A+. They are working hard every time they are out there,” Heck said. “We just made those little mistakes, not moving our feet quick enough. It was a tough loss. We were with them back and forth the whole game. It just comes down to moving our feet quick enough and getting those balls.”
Evidence of the Sabers effort were many long volleys, which, unfortunately for the team, did not always go their way.
The problem for Manistee Catholic came down to the team doing a good job of hitting the ball over but struggling to set up with their passing good hits that could result in kills.
“A lot of our passes went right over off of their serves, so it was hard for us to get set up,” Heck said. “We just kept giving them free ball after free ball. We definitely need to control our passing a little bit more.”
Kaylyn Johnson had three kills, an ace, a block and three digs to lead the Sabers in the match.
“Kaylyn is my all-around player. You could tell by the end of the game that she worked her butt off out there,” Heck said. “She’s definitely a key player and gets our team motivated out there.”
Josie Ziehm finished with a block and 4 digs. Verda Korzeniewski recorded a kill, four aces and four digs. Leah Stickney added an ace and six digs. Brenna Johnson tallied two aces and two digs. Emily Miller chipped in an ace and a dig. Ana Watkins had two aces and four digs. Regan Leiffers finished with a kill and two blocks.
Manistee Catholic Central will continue its season at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 at home against Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy.
The Sabers have two games remaining prior to the start of districts.
“I am hoping to see them solidify that coverage a little bit more and just play together and have fun going into this last week of games,” Heck said. “Sometimes, they take it too seriously and their attitudes get down, so the main focus is having fun playing together. I think they are achieving it pretty well.”
