The Washington Capitals are seeing another DMV native join the ranks of the organization, as the Hershey Bears inked forward Sam Anas to a one-year contract.

Anas grew up in Potomac, Maryland and played for the Montgomery Youth Hockey Association and attended Landon School. He and also laced ’em up with the Little Caps in 2010-11. In 19 games with Washington’s MetJHL team, he dished 20 goals and 21 points. He moved to play NCAA hockey with Quinnipiac in 2014 and ultimately inked an NHL deal with the Minnesota Wild. He is the first player from the Washington, D.C. area to play hockey locally through high school and sign an NHL deal.

After his college career, Anas continued to work toward the NHL and put up stellar totals at the AHL level. He was the league’s scoring champion in 2019-20 after tallying 20 goals and 50 assists for 70 points in 63 games for the Iowa Wild.

This past season, Anas again had an All-Star campaign with the St. Louis Blues’ AHL-affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds. He posted 20 goals and 44 assists for a team-leading 64 points in 75 regular-season games. He also played a key part in Springfield’s run to the 2022 Calder Cup Final with four goals and 11 assists in 18 playoff games. There, he also played with current Capitals netminder Charlie Lindgren and former Washington forward Nathan Walker.

Anas joins an impressive group of fellow DMV natives who have also played in the Capitals organization over the years. Former captain Jeff Halpern grew up in Potomac, Maryland as well and attended Winston Churchill High School and Landon. Herndon, Virginia native and fellow Little Caps alum Joe Snively is currently on the roster and made his NHL debut last season, and he also won a top-6 spot before a wrist injury and subsequent surgery ended his campaign early.

As Anas continues his career, the 29-year-old is still looking to make his NHL debut. Could it happen in the Nation’s Capital?
